also, i'm planning on using this for games, like half-life2/counter-strike:source and call of duty 2, and hopefully be able to play future games at reasonable video quality. what would you guys prefer: t2400 with 2gb or t2500 with 1gb?

and anyone who plays cs:s, how much fps do you get at any video quality?

Well, I would prefer the T2400 with 2 gb of ram if I didn't plan on upgrading the ram with the T2500. You will save some money getting the T2500 with a 1 gig stick of ram, and eventually you can upgrade the Ram. If you don't ever want to upgrade the ram to 2 gigs, go ahead and get the T2400. The only reason I say this is if you regret getting the T2400, that's not a simple and cheap upgrade to have. The ram upgrade is as simple as buying it, unscrewing the area for the ram and just popping it in. I think there are a few brackets you loosen up and then you can easily put it in. However, you might not regret getting the T2400, and so you would have saved money in the longrun.

I've heard this thing gets pretty much flawless performance for cs:source.

Thats true, but you have to consider other things.

T2400 vs T2500 is not a big difference at all. It wont be visible.

And 1gig vs 2 gigs of ram is a HUGE difference. It makes every much quicker, where as the processor only helps when you're archiving or converting and even then, it will only be a few miliseconds difference...

Go with T2400/2gigs of ram. After a lot of research, I realized that this is the choice I will go with also.

Consider other things? What other things do I need to consider? Like I said, if you will be happy with a T2400 then get that with 2 gigs. If you think you might regret getting a T2400, you can get a T2500 and upgrade the ram to 2 gigs later. If you wouldn't upgrade the 1 gig to 2 gigs, by all means go with the T2400 and 2 gigs.

On down the road when these processors can get maxed out, and both cores get used 100%, how much difference will there be?

But if you're gunna upgrade it later, that means being stuck a few months with inferior ram, and in the end, it will still cost you about 80$ more. I'd rather buy everything i need for a computer and not worry about it untill i need to buy a new one. Technology changes really fast, by the time he'll buy another 1GIG stick, he might need more than that.

You can't get more than 2 gigs in this laptop can you... if you can, I didn't realize it supported 2, 2 gig sticks. The key phrase is, if you think you would be unhappy with a T2400, then get a T2500 because the ram CAN be upgraded later. Lildragon needs this for 3+ years. I wouldn't want to be stuck with a processor that I possibly didn't like. The T2500 over the T2400 is only $50 more. That's only $16.66 a year. I have nothing against the T2400, I considered getting it also. But for as little more as it cost to get the T2500, I figured why not? The 1 gig stick would get him by for a while. I played Cs:source, HL2, and cod2 on 1 gig for a year and had very few issues. It is doable, now as future games come out, 2 gigs will become the ideal, just as with Oblivion. I had several "if"'s in my response, and lildragon is the only person that can answer them for him/her.

And... if lildragon got the T2400, then decided he/she wished for the T2500, it's gonna cost more than the cost of the ram. Granted, the Merom will probably be out by then, and that would be a different upgrade, but still.

I understand that 2 gigs of ram is more desirable than a T2500 over the T2400, but two gigs of ram is more easily obtainable than a T2500 if you have a T2400.

I bet you these core duo's in a couple of years will not hit 100% in CPU usage. My 4.5 yr old Dell with a 1.6Ghz P4 is still able to run CS decently. The main thing between the 1.83 and 2.0 is really not that different. The processor prices might not come down with AMD and Intel now duking it out amongst each other, though Intel is ahead. But memory does go down. Right now 1GB is around 80.00USD and is more reasonable than upgrading the processor.
There really shouldn't be any argument here. T2400 with 2 gigs is a better choice. It would cost more money down the line (not to metnion the hassle of installing a new stick of memory) to get a T2500 with 1 gig and upgrade down the line. If you've got the money lying around, just get the T2500 AND 2 gigs if you really need that extra .17 GHz.

Bottom line is don't miss a chance to double your system memory just to get from a 1.83 GHz duo to a 2 GHz duo. I don't think that there's a single person here who would argue that an extra gig of RAM won't speed up your system more than an extra .17 GHz on the processor.
Memory installation isnt that hard with the s96 though(actually only hard thing to replace is the screen). Yes the 1.83 is a sweet spot in terms of speed and affordability and if you can go with the best, go with the 2.0. When merom comes out, and some time goes by, it will be right to upgrade the processor. But till then, primarily the memory and HD are affordable upgrades.

no point in upgrading core duo this early in the game. id wait till 07-08

I agree with you c4... although there is a chance I may make it my summer of '07 project, I will more than likely wait until 08 just to save some money. Plus, by then Vista will have all the major beginning kinks worked out.

You are currently playing CS? not CS:Source? Just out of curiosity, what other processors were out at the time you got your Dell?

Anyways, this thread should move on from the T2400/T2500 debate... if Lildragon explained some stuff about his/her condition, I'm sure most of us would agree what he/she should do.

Has anyone played Guild Wars on this yet?
I myself will be adding another 1 gig stick soon.
Yeah CS:S , and it runs decently but my desktop gets really warm. I dont really remember what other processors are out during that time, and it doesnt matter as you say so continue on with the discussion!

yeah, good choice. Anything interesting about this laptop that anyone would like to share?
sorry if i caused any disagreements, but i've decided to get a t2400 with 1 gig then if there's any sales/promos at some computer store, i'll buy another one and install it myself. core-wise, i'll upgrade that when i get more money!

anyway, in your opinions, does the screen contrast (the grayish black) issue cause a problem with any gaming experiences? how's the gaming resolutions too?
