m1210 body flex

I'm a little bit concerned atm.
With my laptop open, to the left of the touchpad, underneath the keyboard (where the hard drive/PCMCIA card would be) if I press hard on the surface of the hand rest, I can feel and hear the body of the laptop creaking so to speak. The right side has no flex what so ever.

Am I just overreacting?

I'm thinking that these Dell XPS RoadReady laptops would be more stiff and rigid, yet it feels like my left hand rest is popping out?

Anything like this happening to other m1210 users?

Thanks in advance.

I have not tried it out & I don't intend to but from comparing my M1210 to my 700m, all I can say is that I find it surprising that the 700m has got a better build quality than the M1210. I'm not exaggerating.

if i press hard on your finger itll creak and youll make noise

my m1210 has the same problem, but it doesnt matter to me really. I only notice it while trying to make it make noise. i never push that hard with the palms of my hands so it doesnt matter anyways.

mine doesn't do that

I too agree the 700m build quality was much better (at least in the lcd lid) than the M1210.

Ok, I went ahead and disassembled my 5 day old m1210 to figure this out.

Outside:

The left made a creaking noise, the right side was fine.

Inside:

Left side:

Right side:

The Right side has this rubber cushioning, while the left relies on the PCMCIA slot bracket to support it. Good job Dell!

That explains it. Now for some reason, the obvious creaking noise has disappeared after I reassembled it. The creaks are more subtle, and isn't distracting anymore. Yay!

Interesting. The lower right size of my keyboard has got some flex & it's irritating! Just upgraded my RAM to 2GB but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Emm.... guess I'm on the way to contacting Dell & sending my M1210 back for a full refund!!!

mine never came with an nvidia sticker, just curious who all got one?

Ok, that's enough. I'm getting scared now...

"The left made a creaking noise, the right side was fine."

Your M1210 is haunted. No, it doesnt matter if it's only on the left side. Haunted is haunted. Send it back, man! .................

I'm probably the only one, since I am sponsored by Nvidia :-)

You should not return it. M1210 design is really good but asembly quality is so bad. After reassembled, the keyboard flex of my M1210 was fixed perfectly. I found that some crews at the palm rest and the chassis were loose. Even a connection (no crew) of heat dissipation bar was in wrong position.

I'll sure like to keep my M1210 & I'll play with it for a few more days to see how it goes... At this point, I have to say that overall the 700m is better than the M1210, other than the technology (hardware components) that found in them. I'll try hard to convince myself that the M1210 is better in the coming days though.

This is really irritating to me but I thought that after spending $1500+ (after 30% + 12% EPP coupons), this should have at least been better than my 700m but I guess I'm wrong. Furthermore, I keep having this feeling that since I'm still dealing with Dell on the issue of getting a replacement LCD for my E1705, this is "their way of getting back at me!" I mean, I have read that almost all of you M1210 are pleased that your laptops are almost perfect but it doesn't seem to be the case with mine....

*Sigh* Maybe this might be a good thing for me to just return my M1210 (while I can) & wait till next year for Santa Rosa & Vista....

Anyway, despite my rantings on my bad experience with my M1210, I'll still like to recommend this little machine to anyone who is in the market for a "little" powerhouse (especially if you're able to get it at a great discount). The reason is because "what happens to me may not neccessarily happen to you!" (my favorite statement). There are a lot of other good cases in this forum that proof this.

Oh, this means that Dell must have sold a lot of M1210 units during the 30% off EPP period & in rushing through with the orders, they just "hack care!!!" I guess what we pay is what we get!!! Wonder if I returned my M1210 & reorder it at normal prices (without discounts), will I get this kind of s***???

Why not just get an exchange?

is that sticker really that important? if the chasis flexing bothers you as you march up the remote himalayan hillside. why not bother getting a toughbook or even opening the sucker up and fixing the solution by tightening up the screws or whatnot. seriously people for what we are getting for 1500 dollars it's a steal. if however dell leaves a impression of disgust go elsewhere and oh by the way, plan on spending a couple grand more for the same spec'ed xxx brand that coincidently made by/imported straight from taiwan. remember though if you plan on buying electronics from asia besides korea and japan, its probably going to feel cheap or be half assed engineered or assembled

i really believe this is an assembly issue as well. i ordered mine durring the last epp deal (30% 12% 5% -$50), so they sure as hell couldn't be happy with me. my m1210 really has NO flex. i've pushed arround a lot and come up with nothing... feels solid everywhere. maybe i got lucky, just sounds like some peoples were put together a little more sloppily than others
