I haven't read this forum in a long long time. I just noticed that the E1705 has the same layout as the i9300 that i have now. Is it possible to buy just the mobo + cpu and do a swap?

Hi...
It has been asked before but incase you didn't find it...
NO
The 9300 has PCMCIA and the E1705 has the Express card on the side for cards.
The 9300 uses PCIExpress for the Network card, and the E1705 uses Express card.
The 9300 uses a different Keyboard connector then the E1705
The 9300 video card uses a different layout then the E1705
There are probaly more differences, but I don't know them all. It might work if you get the bottom plastics, new video card, and new Wireless card, and keyboard... but I am sure once you add all this up, you might as well get a new E1705 using the $750 off coupon.
Then you would have two systems rather then 1 bastardized one.

I made a similar swap but the chassis of the 9300 are a bit different then that of the e1705. There might be grounding issues because the E1705 uses a newer type of mini pci slot for its wireless card.
It may still be possible, however bare in mind that you will also need to get a PCI-E card slot as the new Motherboard does not use PCMCIA anymore, and No you cant plug it in because the plugs are different.
The Keyboard is also is different, but that is easily attained, the entire palmrest and hinge however will require changing since they do not line up. so you would need to get a new palmrest and hinge cover. Also on the final note, you will require a new LCD Lid because the e1705 has different hinges.
I recently did a m1710 swap out of my e1705 because i intend to convert it to a m1710 for kicks and even that did not go without a hitch. The e1705's chassis has no opening for a docking port that the m1710 has, but there was just enough clearance to mount the board without an issue. I am still running the machine in test phase at the moment, incase the machine goes boom.
However also bear in mind you seriously void your warranty doing this, however that may not be an issue anymore.
So yes it could be done, as for feasibility that is for you to determine.
