I need to buy a laptop for college, it needs to at least have Pentium 4 3.0GHz, 60GB hard drive and 512MB RAM, for the best price. keep in mind that i am a poor college student, and know nothing about computers. Is Dell the computer to get? and any other advise would be great.

What is your price range??? do you need bat life??? Do you need/want it for gaming or other things as well???

Dell has its good and bad, like most out there. If I was going for a P4 laptop I would also look at the Sager line.

you should be thinking about more cost effective parts

CPU = 1.4ghz pentiumM / 2.8ghz Pentium4 / athlon 2800+
Ram = 256MB / 512MB
HD = 30GB / 40 GB

Can you tell me what you plan on using this system mostly for?

Word Processing, Gaming, Surfing the Web etc etc

i'm going to use it for Architecture class where i will be in studio working on projects and designs for hours on end with Architectural Desktop 2004, i will be able to plug in there, but long batt life is needed. my projects will involve 3-d modeling and touring, other things i want to do with it is Word Processing, a little Gaming, not much, and Surfing the Web

Um...with the combination of long battery life and 3D modelling + gaming, it looks like you're going to have to go the route of a P-M.

With 3D modeling and gaming, you're probably going to want a higher resolution screen; I personally can't stand to do graphics work on a XGA/WXGA anymore. You should try for a WSXGA+/SXGA+/WUXGA/UXGA screen.

For your graphics card, you can either go for games or for work - that is, either a video card made for games (Radeon 9600) or one made for professional graphics work (FireGL/Quadro).

So...with everything said, I would say the IBM t41p is excellent if you can afford it, else the HP nc8000 is also good. You can also check out the ABS zForce F2 and its equilvalents from Internetishop/Cyberpowerinc/iBuypower. The Dell Inspiron 8600 can be had w/ decent options for cheap, but I would be aware of build quality.

I would think IBM T series would be very good, price will be high. HP is ok, I like their NC8000 as well, think its a bit overpriced. Also the Dell M60 would be great if you use OpenGL a lot, don't like the GPU for games though.
