defrag. problem

Well, my system defragmenter seems to be broken, it refuses to go past 1% defragmented. Does anybody have any really good defrag free downloads?

you have something running that's changing your file configuration, so it keeps resetting
BTW, I haven't seen that problem since Win Me

98 for me. to the op (if you are running 98/me)...when you run defrag shut down all useless tasks. If you are running XP you may have a trojan downloader that is changing things as dman said.

I always exit or turn off all the icons I have on the system tray (bottom righthand corner). I also turn off my wireless before I defrag. That should get you passed 1%.

Do not run defrag using only battery at less than 20-40% as it wouldn't run...

Try running defrag in safe mode. It's better to do that anyway since there are no other programs running in the back ground.

If you still want to try something different, give O&O or Diskeeper a try. I'm fairly certain that free trials are available from Download.Com.

If windows DF isn't working, there is probably something running, chaning stuff.

Haven't seen this problem since 98 either.

Have you run a spyware check, and anti-virus before starting?

Let us know!
