satellite 2805-S301 memory problem

I am upgrading this laptop. I installed 40G HDD with no problems and installed
XP with no problems. I purchsed what was supposed to be compatable RAM for this system. I had the power off and took out battery. Grounded myself and discharged any static from my body. I installed the RAM and when I rebooted I was getting a system32\drivers error and windows could not load. I tried a repair install and a re-install but that did not work either. I used tuff test lite to test the memory and it looked ok. I went into bios and the amount of memory was detected as I could see the amount. I installed 256MB and I researched it before I bought it. Any ideas? Do I have to do something else in bios? Thanks.

If you remove the new module, does the machine work?

Yes it does. I will post the exact error messages later. It is detected in bios and when I use tuff test lite. I will download memtest and see what happens. I am going to poke around the bios and see if there is somethings for the timing. I have contacted the comany where I bought it and they are going to troubleshoot and look up the compatability but they told me it was compatable before I bought it. What are the senarios...1) bios update or bios config issue 2) bad memory module 3) incompatable module...am I missing anything?

Sounds like the module is bad. Try memtest and if it reports errors, send it back.

I will have to check the documentation that came with the module. If it is not there how else could I obtain this information. I am not familar with cas and ras? Thanks for the replies. You guys have been a great help.

The module that I have is 256MB Toshiba satellite Pro notebook PC100 Sdram sodimm...I ran memtest and 0% passed with new module in. Without the new module the memory tests fine. I am going to return it and get the right ram...If I have one empty slot how do I know for sure that I am getting the right ram. For instance this one said it was for my model laptop....

Here is a site that lists the memory for your laptop and it even has a button for how to replace the memory. Your machine will handle a max of 384MBs of memory

Problem solved! They sent me the wrong module. Well it was either a bad module or the wrong module. They sent me antoher one that looked a little different. I installed it and it works fine...thanks for the fast replies. I will certainly use this site in the future and reccomend it to others.
