Laptop cooler for my AW - Page 2

isnt there an AC adapter or something so you can plug it into the wall
post #22 of 40
You may be able to buy something like a USB to AC plug. THere are chargers that do this, maybe they would work.
Nope, no need to. It does plug into the wall. I just received both of these products in the mail. I took markers advice and purchased these. Now if I only had a laptop to put on top of it.

Just orded lapcool 2 from Newegg. Should arrive in 2-3 days, I'll post how it works out.
Just came in yesterday and I have nothing but good things to say about Lapcool 2. First of all it blows air up into the laptop, right into intakes on the bottom towards the rear end of the laptop. At first I didnt see a major change in temp while I was using the cooler until I propped the legs on the cooler to get some better air flow. Running at max fan speed(you can control it with a little wheel on the back) I was able to see a drop of a about 8-10 C.
Gaming for an hour or 2 sees my gpu temps at around 75-78C with the cooler on full blast it never rises beyond 70, it hover around 65-68 which is pretty much my normal idling temperature

Its USB powered which is no problem since the m9700 comes with 4 usb ports(the one on the back is perfect for it) However it seems to be a bit small for my lappy with about 1 inch hanging off each side and the front. It has 2 kick stand legs on the bottom to cant your lappy about 20 degrees and on the top it has 4 flippable little rubber feet to elevate the laptop about a 1/4 inch or so. The bottom also has 2 compartments with lids to hold extra cables and such, useful for keeping my coax cable and adapter in there. Its constructed mostly of plastic with only the fan housing made of aluminum but thats not to say its fragile, infact it seems pretty robust to me.

I give it out of 10 alienheads

When I did own an Alienware the best notebook cooler I found was specifically made for a 17" notebook, it was black anodized aluminum, made for widescreens, and ran absolutely silent.

What was the name of this you may ask yourselves, why it was the "NotePal" from Cooler Master, the Master Bates of cooling! Check 'em out at a NewEgg.com near you for the rock bottom price of $34.95.

You'll love 'em!

You're talking about this one...

The problem is it won't work well for a 17" notebook. The dimensions they give (Dimensions: 400mm x 300mm x 42mm) is basically the same dimensions of the m9700. 15.75" x 11.8". The problem is the front lip is almost three inches deep and that's included in the measurement. I found one site that listed the platform the notebook sits on is 400mm x 230mm, which is 15.75" x 9".

This means the laptop will hang 3" off the back, and with the screen up all the weight will be towards the rear. In addition, the back edge of the platform won't reach the feet on the m9700, so the edge sits right in the middle of the bottom panel where the vents for the fans are, and there are no supports. This would likely kill any air flow into the lower vents and might damage the heatsink tubes and hardware under the panel.

I really like this cooler, it's too bad it's not deeper. The 7700 has more feet than the m9700, and has a middle row of feet for support, so it may work with the 7700 with it hanging off the back, but it doesn't look to me like it will be a good solution for the m9700. The front lip would also block the dvd tray, and the speakers.

If you take a look at the first picture of lapcool 2, those little tabs flip up into little rubber feet. With my laptop sitting flush with the back of the cooler do you think this would put too much strain on the back pannels? enough to damage whats inside? The rubber pads of the cooler touch the bottom of the laptop about a 1/2 inch from the back rubber feet
post #30 of 40
I don't think it should be a problem, it looks like the feet are pretty close to the edge where it's stiff. You should be able to tell if it's strong where the rubber pads touch.

The problem I see with the notepal is that the back edge hits right in the middle of the panel and there isn't much support on the sides it looks like. And where the back edge is, the bottom of the laptop would lay directly on the vents, so I would think it would block the ability of the vents to take air in freely.

I'm bummed, I really like the notepal. I'd considered getting one anyway and having a friend cut it in half and make a 3" insert so it would be deep enough to support the feet, but it would be a big effort. It looks like the extruded aluminum part was designed for 15" notebooks, and they just cut a longer piece for the 17". That works on width, but not the depth unfortunately.

I have yet to see a cooler that actually allows all the feet of a 17" platform be supported. If they don't start putting them out soon, I'll make my own. I just need to find a supply of low power usb fans...

Actually it seems to work pretty well at it's intended function - keeping temperatures under control..

It does block the CD drive (but how often do you go in there? I just shuffle it forward a little onto the lip to use the CD drive), but sound still comes out of the speakers just fine..

It does hang over the back, but it's perfectly stable - the laptop doesn't tip backward unless you have the NotePal at about a 30' angle.. I can even prop the front edge on my legs and back edge on the sofa and it stays stable.

It doesn't seem to be damaging anything inside the unit either - it couldn't, really, as it's easily as wide as the laptop so if it was crushing the underside it would also be crushing the sides of the laptop upward - that'd be one flimsy laptop

Works better for me than something that hangs over on all sides like most laptop coolers, as it stays stable and doesn't fall off when it's sat on the arm of the sofa - without it all the weight would be dead center underside with zero airflow..

I don't know why but every time I try and post I get bumped off. I love the NotePal but your right Hammer it did in fact hang over. It want (for a 7700) 3 inches it was more like an inch and a half to two inches. But nevertheless it did hang over.

Luckily for a 7700 the footing was placed just on the edge to perfectly balance the notebook and let air flow freely. Otherwise I would have to agree that to much overhang would basically defect the purpose.

I have a LapCool 2 if anyone wants it, send me there necessary info by PM - it's free to a good home and I'll kick in everything which means ShIpPiNg!

I just got my m9700 in a few days ago. I already happened to own the Nexus TDD-3000 which I used for my old Sager and it works pretty well with my new rig. I typically lay in bed and just use this to keep the heat from burning my legs during extended gaming sessions. The only complaint I have of the Nexus is that it doesn't quite seem wide enough. Does anyone know if there are plans to make a wider one? A nexus TDD-5000 perhaps. Do any other companies make a similar one? I like the design of the nexus plus the fact that there are no fans to plug-in, worry about or break over time. One other thing that scare me a little about the nexus is that it has sharp edges and I see the potential to scratch my new cyborg green paintjob.
Yeah. a wider nexus would be better.
Half of each of my legs of my clevo are on. the other half are leaning off.
The nexus would work better for laptops without legs that can have the whole back touching the metal surface for a nicer heat transfer. but it gives room for the clevo's fan to have decent airflow.

I have one of those and its too small for the ASUS Z83V laptop, I hope the AW m7950 I ordered at the beginning of the month is a better fit
post #38 of 40
Anyone know of a laptop cooler that will accomodate the mALX? So far all I've found max out at 17" laptops.
I think I'd get 2 15" laptop coolers and run them next to each other...
