Hey there,

I am currently looking at purchasing the Gateway Platinum Edition Notebook with AMD Turion (MX6455)- and was wondering if anyone had any comments on the product, as I have not yet been able to find any. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

my personal thoughts, just be amused with them:
1. turion 2ghz---------: very à la mode, cool running
2. ati xpress chipset---: very good
3. gpu x300------------: nah, why gateway always does the trick of good processor combining with so-so gpu, beats me
4. pc2700 ram---------: totally uncool in nowadays laptop and with availability of pc3200 running about, at least they offer stock 1gb installed, just to dampen the pain , i guess
5. hard drive-----------: good size with 120gb stock, but does not mention anything about the speed (anything less than 5400rpm is whoosh)

cheers ...

It's a solid machine and you are getting what you pay for. The only complaints would be the graphics card if you are into gaming and the harddrive speed. If you want to spend the money you could always buy a faster/larger driver and get an external enclosure so that you can keep using the old drive.

I never bothered increasing the memory from 512MB or getting a new harddrive on my laptop but I'm still happy with it's general performance. I just wish it had a better graphics card and processor now due to age.

Yes, I was refering to my laptop. 1GB should be more than enough for now. Of course in a few months (crossing fingers while simultaneously feeling ambivilent) when Vista is launched we'll need 1GB minimum.

BTW, you might want to look at the new X2 model from HP sold at Bestbuy as well. The specs and price are pretty close, but you do get a few extras like a remote, the ability to quick play music/dvds, and a built in webcam. It's also 14" instead of 15" and weighs about a pound less.
