How do I get my old heat sink off...I want to put in a new fan...do I have to take off the mobo? I know it is prob glued on. I have a Dell 4600 bout in Aug of 04 if that helps.

or should I just leave the heat sink on and get a better fan...also the reason is I want to OC my P4 3.0Ghz proc. so I pretty sure I'll need a better fan plus the one I have is crazy loud...thanks for any help you guys/gals can give me.

2 things!

1. Is your fan loud when you first start your computer after its been shut down after a while?

2. The heat sync is part of the fan.

You might want to hold of buying a new fan for the computer and just upgrade if you can. Its 2004 and dell has a trade in program for 2yr old computers (I think its dell anyways...)

My fan is pretty noisy all the time even when it is in idle, and I didn't know about the Dell trade in thing I'll have to look into that.

Well, Idle or not, is it noisy when you first start it up?

My guess (just a hunch) is that the inside of your box is starting to heat up more than normal (can be caused by dust, and age) and the cpu fan has to work more.

Try using your computer with the side off and see if it isn't as noisy. Or if the noise goes away after a little bit.

Open it up there should be a shorud over the fan/heatsink combo remove it then there should be to clips holding the Fan/heatsink onto the MOBO undo the clips and lift the whole assibmly off the board. This is after you have decide on the new fan/heatsink combo.
