i8600 and cpu going down to 0.6!

Hello,
I know this subject has been treated and retreated, but see what happened:
I was on AC (no battery!), set the quickset to max performance; checked and it said 1.7ghz.
Then installed other stuff, browsed the internet, rebooted.
coincidentally found out the cpu was back to 0.6ghz!

how come?

so I've installed the speed xp utility and set it to max performance.

Would it prevent windows from reducing the speed by its own account?

How are you checking the CPU speed???

my computer, right settings, it shows the cpu speed.
Also using the intel frequency ID tool.

Since there's already another thread on this, I'll just cut/paste my previous response.

Don't have a heart-attack man, eesh.

It's called "speed-stepping" and it's actually a FEATURE that makes it so your system doesn't always run hot (therefore yer fans ain't always on, and your system is quieter more often).

When the extra mhz are needed, your fans kick on and the chip goes back up to your normal 1.7ghz. When you're farting around on the net and typing papers, or whatever, there's no reason to use 1.7ghz -- it's virtually useless.

When you play games and do other cpu intensive operations, the mhz are available.

You can turn off speed-stepping in the BIOS if it really bugs you that much, but there's no reason to return the system.

not quite rihght as if u disable speedstep on the bios you end up with the slowest performance mode 0.2ghz.

all what I want is windows NOT changing the frequency of my cpu.

So then you want the fan on at full blast all the time right?

Exactly my point too.

Let it sink in: it's a FEATURE, leave it alone, it knows what it's doing.

Sorry, didn't mean to ignore this comment.

In my experience, this is not the case. But as already stated, there should be no reason to worry about it using speed-stepping. If you want to try it out, get something that's cpu intensive running (like a modern game) and then open up the taskmanager or whatever you're using to clock your cpu, and check things out.

yeah,
fair enough; I just want peace of mind that windows wouldn't screw up the frequency to anything slower than expected ... and windows is windows!

dont beleive windows is controling speed step I think the chipset is.

Im Sorry I was wrong Windows XP does control this. Just found out after some research.
