Having used a 700m, I can tell you that the sound on the XPS M1210 is not that much better, sound is missing bass, sounds tinny, and distorts at higher volumes. It's one of the reasons Dell's included headphones with the A/V pack is a life saver for me.

unless there is something actually wrong with your speakers there is no way anyone can legitimately complain about the speakers on the m1210. theres only so much space there. from my experience with other laptops, with all the factors considered, i think the m1210 speakers are actually great. much better than i was expecting. bass requires greater ammounts of air to be moved which simply can't be accomplish due to speakers size constraints in a laptop of this size. i haven' experienced any of these artifacts that your talking about though, as long as its not just poorly encoded mp3s you might want to talk to dell about that

I had the xps gen 2 laptop and now i have the m1210 and i have to say it's not that great of sound on the m1210. My gen 2 was great!!! The best i have ever had on a laptop.

if you mean artifacts as in breaks in the music/sound, it's because of basic acceleration is on, and not full in dxdiag.

For once, I'll have to complement the M1210 speakers. I have both my M1210 & 700m side by side & comparing them by playing some CDs, I'll have to say that the M1210 speakers (though lacking in bass as expected) is a lot better than the 700m in the sense that the mid-level range on the M1210 speakers does not "break" or distort like on the 700m speakers.

You owned one of the best sounding notebooks of course the M1210 isn't going to sound that good.

I have a 700m and my only complaint is the sound. Looks like the 1210 is about the same, then.

yae, the sound on m1210 is a real letdown. it isnt crisp like my soundbar that came with the dell lcd monitor. picture a sound that comes from over the headphones on full blast, thats exactly how it sounds.

you need to break in the speakers before you get optimum sound. same with headphones alike. the sound should clear up a bit. i had the similiar problems with my mom's hp l2000 (altec lansing) speakers. its been over a year now and i must say i am quite impressed by the clarity of the speakers. although compared to the 9300 with the audigy it's not really comparable.

I agree, it seem like speakers in general do need to be broke in. I noticed it a few years back on my truck speakers.

its more the subwoofers that need to be broken in than the other speakers responsible for higher pitches. this break-in allows the subwoofer's larger diaphragm to stretch and break itself in, if this is not done the sound won't be optimal, and you run the risk of permanantly damaging the subwoofer by playing high/loud bass before permitting this "break in" time. break in is usually done by playing some music, heavier in bass throughout the speakers on repeat while you are at work or something. be sure to play a playlist of different songs to allow for the best variety in tones and pitches for breaking in the speakers+subwoofer optimally.

I've read in dell forum a suggestion on how to make the volume/sound in M1210 loud. See: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportfor...essage.id=4438

I don't know if that will work. I download the file and will try to use it if my upcoming m1210's sound is soft (if the headphone is not in use).

I downloaded such utility from http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/
