HT / Dual-Core

OK - serious subject now.

Does CP see dual cores as 2 CPU's like it does with Intel's hyper-threading? As in, taskmgr shows (2) processors and utilization graphs? My HP servers at the office, dual Xeon's with HT, show 4 processors/graphs.

If so, why in the world would dual-core machines be offered with XP Home, seeing as home is UniProcessor, and is not MultiProcessor/SMP capable?
You have no option for affinity, or giving threads to the other core, right?

Can anyone confirm this either way?

Windows XP Home can only deal with one CPU - but Microsoft allows it to run fine with dual-cores and Hyperthreaded CPUs (as long as there's only one CPU in the system, they don't mind if it has several processing cores).

Likely ordering an 8000 series tomorrow and debating between Microsoft Media version with tuner, or going for XP Professional. Under the Media (which is Home plus the media stuff right?),is it not really using all the processor power? what about on the professional version?

From what I as able to google, it looks like either SP1 or SP2 provided the ability to use dual-cores, and apparently Win can tell the difference between dual-cores, and dual CPU's. MS even went as far as mentioning how the licensing would work, which is that another core would not count as another CPU for licensing specs, ie, 2 dual-cores, are licensed as 2 procs, not 4 procs.

Unless you need media center, I would go Pro, because of the many security and usability upgrades in Pro vs Home / MCE. google something like "windows xp home pro comparison" and you'll hit some sites that'll have much more detailed info.

My guess is that Winturdz doesn't really do anything particularly sophisticated with dual core processors. However, it is quite easy to dummy up a dialog box that *looks* like there is some fancy shlt going on... which I would more likely expect from microsuck.
