Call of Duty Multiplayer Problem

Im having problems connecting to a buddy of mines computer playing COD. We connected out two computers with a firewire cable but we cannot figure out what to do to play call of duty. We have tried messing with all of the options but we must be missing something. Can someone give us a quick walkthrough on what to do to set up a game with the right settings?

does the firewirenetwork work in other games, and in windows? or is it just in COD that it does not work.
are you sure you have assigned proper ip-adresses in the firewirenetwork. and so on?
