XPS 1710 Black Cover

Hi,
Just got my new 1710 2 weeks ago, and am in love with it! Sweet playing oblivion with all high settings.
My only dissapointment is how soft the material the black cover on the lid is made from. I had to use an old bag the first few days, and the power brick wore 3 small grove into it, even though seperated. Heck, it even retains a signature from when my wife signed a check on the closed lid. (thank goodness she writes softly). A few other small scratches here and there. Is this normal for the XPS line? My 2 1/2 year old Latitude D600 still looks almost new, with minimal scratches. I use notebooks as *mobile* computers, so a bit worried this thing is going to look like it's been through a war after awhile.
Are the covers replacable, and is there anyway to protect them better? I have bought a better bag, with more padding, but any other suggestions? Or are the scratches/gouges a *badge of honor*!

Thanks

There may be a thin layer of plastic still over the back cover. It is usually on so well that you can't even tell that it's there. The best way to see if the plastic is still on there is to feel around the dell logo. If the plastic was on there be aware that the top will still scratch easily but not as bad as the plastic.......Of course this is on my m170 so the 1710 might be different.

Sheesh....I feel silly. After looking closely at the dell logo, it is obvious it does have a plastic coating. Now a sillier question....this is on tight....how do others remove it?

Thanks!!

I bet everyone has your experience at least once in a life time.

Yep.....just had to get a corner up. Looks a lot better now.....gorgeous cover. My wife wouldn't stop laughing, but admitted even she didn't notice it was a plastic cover. Too flush with the surface.

Thanks to both for prompt replies!

Spiritwraith,

Even though you took that plastic off the black part will still scratch easily, so be careful. Mine already looks like a car's paint with all the swirls on it.

Yep, will be careful. Even with all the gouge/scratches in what turned out to be the plastic, the surface underneath was pristine. Have a much better padded bag now, so will help. My notebooks truly are *portable*; I take them everywhere, so am sure I'll get a few. Make look for something that can protect it better.

Thanks,

NOOOOOO DONT REMOVE IT...Keep it there or later on you will regret it. It will at least take the surface scratches rather than your black cover. Also buy a 17" laptop sleeve with no zippers and cushioned inner to keep it looking brand new. My friend has a M1710 and took off the plastic a week later and now has a bunch of hairline scratches and is upset. I still have the plastic on my M170. Jus my 2 cents.

I agree. I will be leaving the plastic on mine. I have kids...

I'm definitely not removing the plastic from mine. My wife likes to take my laptop out to her college library to study and/or starbucks (I better hurry up and order some complete care). I need to buy her a 700m from the outlet asap heh.

To me that's like the guys at the car shows with vipers that still have the palstic on the seats from the factory...

Why not just enjoy the notebook, without leaving the ghetto-plastic on?

Take care of it as much as you can, and if it does take a few hits, it's just cosmetic.

I didn't even realize that it was there either. I ripped the sucker off immediately after reading this. It looks so much better now!

If you get really angry about the scratches, you could always buy a new LCD cover...
