Just got a replacement...

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

I haven't posted here in a while, but Dell finally fixed my XPS2's overheating issues by giving me a replacement system. The replacement is an M1710 with a 7900 gs and 2.0 ghz dual core processor.

I'm just wondering, what kind of 3dmark05 score should I be aiming for?

All I seem to see on the forums are the gtx scores...

Additionally, I was wondering what the "best" 7900 GS drivers currently are?

Thanks a ton!

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of warranty did you have w/ your XPS2? (CC, RRD, etc)

TIA

What video card did you have? If I don't get a part in by Tuesday and/or my computer keeps overheating with the new part, I get a replacement, and I am sure itll be a 1710 since I have a decent m170 (everything maxed except a 2.0 M)

I want to know if they compensate for the 7800GTX or just figure 7900GS is just as good.

While I am really happy still with my Gen 2, I have been having heat issues and some white screen issues. I know that eventually I'll be contacting support and will probably end up replacing my machine (full Complete Care/Next Business Day). But how can I ensure that I would get the 7900 GTX? The 7900GS is better thanmy 6800 Ultra but if the GTX is a possibility, it almost seems like a waste not to get it. Can people who get replacements pay for upgrades at the same time if they aren't offered in the replacement?

If your original vid. card is a 6800 ultra, then they will replace it with a M1710 with 7900gs, if the original was a 7800 gtx, then they will give you a 7900 gtx.

And no, you may not purchase any upgrades for the replacement unit, you can only do it after you have received the system.

Thanks for the info Tommmmmmmmms. I don't mind paying "after market" for a GTX. I could always sell the GS and buy the GTX.

Thanks again,

Calstar, did you have a 7800GTX I am assuming in your M170?

I have 2 days until I have a valid reason to ask for an exchange. I just have to email a supervisor. Hopefully he gets back to me in a quick fashion, but as long as I have a guarantee by one supervisor they can't dispute it. I was curious, I am going to ask him for an invoice before he sends it, but if he doesn't give me the 7900GTX since I already have the 7800GTX, does anyone know a good way to push for the upgrade, seeing as they won't understand that the 7800GTX outperforms the 7900GS?

I have been told by Dell not to use my computer until the fan/replacement comes in, so I can sort of pitch a fuss if they won't give me comparable parts and express shipping :-p I just want to make sure they'll send out the right card. Also, does anyone know if they ship red/black randomly. Id rather have black as it doesn't scream "Steal me" like red does.

I had a M170 and Dell replace the black M1710 with 7900GS. I am gonna call Dell Monday for 7900GTX. Hopefully everything is smooth.

BTW, I think the M170 run smoother than the M1710 OC. don't know why.... This 3SMark2005 sometimes don't give the right figure....

But did you have the 7800GTX in your 170? I wanna get this all knocked out in one order, Id hate to go through more hassle, not knowing if the 7900GTX is guaranteed.

I think Calstar Benz originally ordered a M170 with a 6800 go ultra, but when he asked for a video card replacement, he was sent a 7800 GTX.

If that is the case, then they will not give you a 7900gtx. They will only see what is on your original order and not what they had sent you as a replacement component.

My 9300 originally had the 6800Vanilla, they replaced it with a XPSm170 with 7800GTX, do you think they'll look at the m170, or look back towards my original 9300 configuration?

I mean either way a 7900GS is sweet, and I doubt I'll really notice a difference from 7800GTX to that, since Im not too picky about framerates, it'd just be nice to have a more future proof card
