Review: Z96j Review

Specs
Asus Z96js 15.4" 1680 x 1050 With colorshine WSXGA
X1600 graphics card
Core Duo T2500 (2.0 ghz)
2x 1 gb 667
80 gb 7200
Built in bluetooth
Wireless
Slot load burner

Appearance, It looks just like the S96j, I like the clean, thin look. It looks so much different in person, I expected it to bigger, but it is amazingly thin and light (compared to othe laptops of seen).

Screen:
I love it, it looks crisper, clearer and brighter than my old Samsung191t,(19inch), which ran at 1280 x 1024. I would, without a doubt, take the better resolution, which was one of the drawback I personnaly had with the S96j ( still like it though).

Thermals:
The keyboard does heat up a little, but not like super hot, I've come from a regular desktop so it may be just me. (its my first laptop). It doesn't become irritating but its noticable. The exhaust duct is on the back, so its out of your way.

Sound
It is quite a silent computer, my seagate external hdd is louder than it. When the fan kicks into high gear you hear it but still silenter than my external hdd.

Speakers, could use some work but i'm not complaining.

Keyboard
Its just like any other laptop, some people say there is flex, but I dont know what it is, if I push down hard it does move down a litle but ever so slightly.

Touchpad
Its great compared to other laptops I've worked on, its really sensitive at times, it has a scroll bar on the right and the buttons are pretty cool.

Value
I purchased this for about 1700-1800 but that was with an extra battery
I ordered it from GenTech, It took a day to ship from GenTech to my house (cause I live in CA) but I thought that was pretty cool. Ken did a fantastic job in terms of build time.

Battery Life

Still testing because I use it as desktop, and its always connected to the ac adapter without the battery so never tested it yet.

Gaming
I've played Cs, and Need For Speed Underground, and all I can say is wow! I love it they're so fast. I ran them off the external hdd, but it handeled it like a champ. While I was gaming i had multiple ie's open, itunes, aim, and it still was flawless.

Benchmarks
Still to come

The amount of USB ports is quite a bit, im pretty satisfied with that, it has more than the dells that I have at school.

Noise of Slot Load can be annoying sometimes but I guess cause its a slot load. It makes an annoying sound when you boot up like a loud motor, just for people who are thinking about the slot load. Also, it doesn't accept the cds like some dvd players where you push it in a tiny bit and then it sucks it in, no it is more like you push it in half way and then a loud motor kicks in to suck the rest in. I thought it would be like the dvd players, but thats ok.

I had an installation issue that was easily installed
INSTALLATION NOTE!! you need xp sp2 to install stuff on the laptops with the pci cards, sorry I didn't know that and called ken, but it was easily solved. Did scare me for a little bit. Easy fix, just had to use slip streaming, heres the link

http://www.geekgirls.com/windowsxp_slipstream.htm

It baisically converts your sp1 to sp2.
Any questions, go ahead and post and Ill answer as soon as possible.

Summary
I highly reccomend this laptop to anyone, it is the best combination of power and weight. I have not seen a single laptop with these specs that has this weight. Weight is around 5.5-6.3 lbs Ill give exact weight later on.

AND I GOT A FREE CARYING CASE WITH IT

Sounds great, but WSXGA+ is too much for me for a litle 15.4" screen.

Good to hear you liked it.

Since the lid is exactly the same as the S96, are there any differences between the Z96 and S96 other than the screen and BT?

No, they are exactly same built, only Asus put WXGA panel and leave BT slot empty when they ship the S96J to Intel.

Hi Ken. I see that both of them are identical, shoot, so many people like this notebook that ive shown them, but there hooked with the Dell and HP looks. I guess those decals and stickers are good to put on the lid then I guess.
Do they have the black stripe on the back, or does it look just like the S96J? Because i think the S96J is pretty fugly.
Nope, they have the same lids. Its a nice plain look, but who buys a notebook for the lid and look? Everything else is perfect except the look...oh noes...

I just don't get why the VBI makes them put those goofy ass things for customizable lids. Fugly, man, fugly. I still am really interested in Asus, I was just hoping.

Thanks man that's great . I'm pleased . Oh btw, have you tested battery life yet? (no need to do that for me, just wondering if you have )

no i haven't i use it as a desktop so i don't even put the battery in, people say when its always connected and battery is in the performance fo the battery goes down. so i never bother putting it in. i just wish there was like a cover for it so the ocntacts stay dust free.
