I'm stumped. I was getting "Files don't match" errors when trying to burn files to the CD/DVD burner using Nero. While I was checking, I compared files on the HD and the CDROM drive using cmd fc /b. They were never exact copies. Bad for archives, right?

So I checked HD to HD copies using both Ctrl-C/V and drag/drop. Guess what! "File-a" didn't match "Copy of File-a." The larger the file, the more exceptions.

This only happens on this 4780 running XP-Pro. My old NP-8553, running XP-Pro, no burner, all files match.

Could this be a memory error or something connected with the CD burner drivers?? Anyone else find this?
(P.S. I couldn't find the "pulling hair out" smiley!)

A follow up: I ran those memory test programs and found an unstable (BAD) DIMM chip, unstable in highest memory map. This helps explain why my 'copy' file attempts were failing.

In the good old DOS days "Verify on" would have spotted this!
