A film fanatic's notebook!

For an avid DVD watcher (like myself), picture quality is everything. Vivid colors, a sharp picture, and a smooth frame transition with no sign of ghosting, pixelation, or graininess is what makes the experience that much better. What notebook will give this kind of quality? What is king??

Mac Sony Tosiba

I think any Sony with x-brite is the best.

I rarely recommend them, but check out some Fujitsu laptops. They have the best screens out there, no matter what anyone says.

Sony Xbrite are great screens, that is if you're willing to put price, tech support, and other little things aside to grab that. If you want a no-nonsense machine with a great screen, indeed Fujitsu is your brand.

Apple Mac or Asus especially W1/W2 models!

You should break it down; Find out what the best screens are, and then in which laptops they are being used. Narrow that list by discarding any models that have sub-par CPU & GPUs.
Better player software can always be added later.

Besides the screen, another thing to consider is the speed and size of your internal Hard Drive -- should be large and fast. That is where you will rip your movies. And get an external Hard Drive that is more than double the size of your internal (I'm talking 200Gb and more). That is where you will save your saved movies. This drive will stay at home on your desk when you go away. That's why you want a large internal drive in the first place. This external drive will also be where you back-up your internal drive's files. And don't forget a decent sound board/card with external speakers (those will stay home as well). Just a few thoughts from a movie loving notebook owner (new to the notebooks, not to movies).

Agree with that, I've got Fujitsu - Mac - and Sony at home, but so far watching DVD from my Fujitsu is far more exciting...

That's what i've been hearing all along - that Fujitsu's screen is a notch above. Hmm, maybe that's why they can get away with the steeper price? Mac could work, but i've heard that the previous generation had better screens, and Sony sounds good too, but I keep seeing that reliability isn't up to par w/ Mac and Fujitsu. I'm off to do the field test this weekend. What kind of programs favor DVD's the best I wonder??

As for sound quality, Creative's sound blaster audigy 2 zs (I believe that's the correct name, check around creative's site) is a pcmia card that has sound quality equal to the pci version. It retails for 100 but I believe newegg has it for around $65.

I have no complaint for my Fujitsu laptops they are have pretty much the best screens in their classes.
