YEP, Data is FAR MORE important that the cost of a laptop....
On external hard drive enclosures there are several ways to go, pre-built, or DIY, 3.5, or 2.5
3.5 drives require a power brick.. 2.5's should not... Thing is the 3.5 desktop drives are ALLOT cheaper..
250 gig desktop drive being like $50 after rebate, add to that the below enclosure for $24.99 and you have a good backup solution.

After several WEEKS of looking at ALL the external enclosures on the market I went with a DIY option from a company called APRICORN.... http://apricorn.com/
The ones I chose being the EZ-BUS-DT-KIT
(usb 2.0-ide internal interface), and the EZ-BUS-DTC-KIT
(usb 2.0-ide interanl interface = FIREWIRE 400)
(They also have one that will take a SATA drive, EZ-BUS-DTS-KIT...
KIT means it's the enclosure only... you install your own drive and save big $$$$$.. takes all of 2 minutes to install the drive... So simple a 5 year (or less) could do it!)Very nice units, keep the hd cool. I've emailed the company several times with pre-sales questions and they were always FAST to respond... Unlike other vendors like Mapower and others which don't respond to e-mails at all. Addtionally Apricorn has a TOLL-FREE number for tech support... again unlike other vendors.
Right now you can pick up the DT here for $24.99
which is a VERY good price. http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?dpno=294942
Here's a thread with allot of info on enclosures.... (Search for my posts- Also look for a poster by the name of SickTeddyBear....)http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/mess...hreadid=496281
On last thing... Unlike other vendors which make/sell external hard drive enclosure "kits".... Apricron uses these SAME enclosures in whole line of enclosures they sell with hard drives pre-installed.... Providing SUPPORT to the end user.
Because of such they can "help" you with issues that may arise... Unlike other vendors that just sell the enclosure...
Here's some more info for you. Take it as you may. I'm very happy with the DT, and DTC that I have.
One thing that seperates these units from others is
1: The hard drive sits in a metal tray
2: The hard drive has a direct thermo path to the external aluiminum casing.... (alot of units on the market have an external aluiminum casing but the hard drive is ISOLATED from the external housing.)
3: Plus it has a quite, HUGE 75 fan.
It uses PASSIVE and ACTIVE cooling
(the active.. not really being needed...) which means your drive runs really cool.. and if the fan does fail the drive doesn't overheat...http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...Fencoding=UTF8
