Everyone knows that Apple's Intel powered portable lineup gets hot, but this is insane! An enterprising fellow figured out that it would be possible to actually fry an egg on the bottom of his black MacBook. Granted, it probably took something like 3 times as long than if he had used a stove, but thats obviously not the point. For bonus points, keep your coffee warm by placing it on top of your MacBook power adapter.

While obviously a stab at Apple for releasing such hot machines, I think its important to understand the fact that Apple has no control over how hots Intel's processors run. I'm sure the engineers in Cupertino do their best to make the machines run as cool as possible, but there are some things that even Ive and his team can't do.

noone really sees the news section, and it is notebook related anyway... but I guess that if the mods feel that this should be in OT, so be it

Mac-book is like 'Mac-donalds', they're both used only by rednecks, and now for the big special, they both fry eggs.
this is important for laptop people though, so now people making all the "macbook vs xps 2100" and "mbp vs whatever" threads have one more thing to consider
post #6 of 22
Lol that's pretty neat though.
is it inadequate cooling or what. i don't believe the intel chips in macs are especially hotter than in other brands. but other brand laptops can get pretty hot too underneath.

I think my GE stove from 1970 is a bit more efficent then the macbook...that goes for computing purposes to. :P

EDIT: no offense to the mac users...there good for video edeting and stuff...its just I managed a cimputer lab of them and they where the worst things for stability I have ever seen....I have this whole anti-mac thing after that...cant...stand...em

I'm starting to be glad I didn't buy a macbook... :-) And what the heck are you talking about rednecks mystery, I don't know any rednecks that use an apple, it's what all the "trendy" people buy, lol, and mcdonalds is for the fat slobs lol. Kidding... Is another reason for the insane temperatures because there is a layer of tin foil on it? Maybe I'm wrong, but doesn't it transfer alot more heat, but then again, it can only get as hot as the notebook right... I dunno [/useless ramble]
turbo, although i'd imagine the foil is there to protect the computer from getting greesy, it can actually get hotter than the laptop, if there is any wrinke in it, what it does is creates an air pocket which will store the heat and thus actually make it several degrees warmer than straight out laptop heat

Isn't that an interesting idea. Perhaps you might elaborate and explain just how you came to such a conclusion? Being a Mac owner from San Francisco, I'm not often called a "redneck" and am surprised to hear that only "rednecks" use Macs.

I'm looking forward to being enlightened further by your next post, which I'm sure will be just as logical, well-meaning and inspiring as the one quoted above.

They use exactly the same CPUs as the other brands - Apple's cooling system is just less effective (they may have tried to make it too thin or too quiet, with the result that the CPU gets too warm).

Other laptops get pretty hot underneath - but normally only when there's no ventilation. That one's got plenty of space for airflow around the hot area.

could just be a mac's chasis with a heating element under it. Faked, rigged up for the photo?

You guys just don't get it. It's a product feature. Who whouldn't want to use their macbook as a stove as well. I know I would. This makes me want to buy a macbook even more. I know next time I go backpacking I won't be bringing a camp stove, I'll be bringing my trusty Macboook. Kudos to Apple for such great product disign. Their way ahead of the competition.

Not bad, efree - a dig at Apple, but funny.

If they put a raised apple logo on the bottom you could run the risk of being branded as a mac user if used as a "laptop"

Mac user doesn't seem so bad. "Redneck" on the other hand, somehow seems less than complimentary.
