As I said, I prefer the ASUS in looks, hardware (X1600), and build quality, but I wouldn't mind being stuck with the Dell. Any opinions?

The X1600 on the asus blows the x1400 on the Dell away...

Its a good deal but the 1600 is a better buy then the 1400. btw, invest in 2gb of ram.. its worth it

The 1600 is soooo much better then the 1400. I too had a similar laptop configred from dell, but the graphics card and the fact that I wanted a 14 in screen drove me away from it, I instead invested in a a8jm.

With both notebooks, the performance difference between 2.0 and 1.83 are pretty close, so if you really need more power, go with the T2500.

Dell bundles PC training into their warranty automatically if you're buying off the EPP student program. I'd like to ask the very same question of them...but happily I'm not doing business with them!

This is quite easy.

Asus quality vs. Dell quality: Asus wins.
X1600 vs. X1400: X1600/Asus wins.

Second, the Asus has an integrated webcam (doesn't matter that much, but hey, it's there). I believe the Dell has a high resolution screen, so if that one satisfies you more than the normal 1280*800, you might wanna check out the Z96J instead.

ok, as long as you dont pay for "pc training"

if you are on nbf, you prolly dont need it

from someone thats been a dell lappy fan boy to an ASUS lappy fan boy and now im a dell laptop owner i would say... get the ASUS.

I bought a dell 9300 from my original ASUS Z71V because the dell had the faster 6800 GO and Dell has a great upgrade path for the 9300 not officially but with hacks it will run any 3d card the XPS will run because they are essentially the same laptop.

Anyways extra 3d power aside ASUS has much much much better build quality if you compare the size and weight of the notebooks and base that on portability it isnt enough. The ASUS laptops just feel so much more solid it gives you a lot more confidence while bringing them around... Dells by contrast... im scared to take my 9300 out of my house. It feels a lot more flimsy. Im sure a dell user wouldnt notice this unless he used a lot of other laptops in his lifetime...like i have.

Dells advantages are they are a huge company and because of that they have a better upgrade path for their 3d cards then ASUS or the entire MXM standard! Dells own 3d card standard lets you upgrade from ATI to nvidia! No one has ever pulled that off to my knowledge. But because of Dells buying power both cards meantfor the 9300 the bottom of the bin ATI X300 and the next up nVidia 6800Go share the same interface... along with the 6800 Go Ultra and the 7800GTX both found on the XPS M170.

Anyways sorry if im confusing. If the price difference is only a few hundred and the specs are the same...i'd go with ASUS everytime!

Then get the Z96J. It's the same as the S96 but with a WSXGA screen.
