Just wanted to get an idea of how many folks are satisfied with Dell's new "Ultra Portable". Have seen a lot of issues with build quality, keyboard flex, bad screens, etc. Wanted to get an idea of how many were actually satisfied with their new baby.
Thnx.

Well, maybe I'm used to crappy build and screen quality, or maybe I just got lucky, but I'm very happy with my system. I didn't have any keyboard flex, the build quality seems solid and the screen looks great.

yeah you'll more than often see bad posts on any laptop than good ones, just nature of it. i love my m1210, and after reformating it and setting it up just how i want it, it couldnt be perfect for now. (except for the lcd being touchy as to whether i view it from above or below.. needs to be just perfect for a good picture). all other problems with the screen not turning back on after opening the lid from closing it, keyboard flex, and poor build quality, are definitely not visible with my m1210!
i've never owned a laptop before, and i am impressed with the quality and grade of the m1210, i coudln't imagine a laptop having "weak screens and lids" where if you touched the back of the lid, the lcd would ripple. nor could i imagine a laptop with hinges which seemed fragile among many other things.
i foresee this laptop lasting a very long time, as long as the hdd or something goes out unexpectedly, just from a bad luck of the draw. im also not overclocking because i dont see the benefits of extreme more heat, more than a laptop already is hot, and straining components of the laptop which would be hard to replace. just being cautious for long term investment.

same here, no flex. as for the screen...it's great, although my only complaint is that the viewing angle sucks. I'm very happy though. I think some people are just too picky and actually go out of their way to find problems that would otherwise be un-noticeable.

Other than the weak LCD back cover and rippling screen, all of which have been replaced. I am totally satisfied with the M1210.

Just need to get MediaDirect to work again.
your m1210's lcd had a weak backcover and was rippling? and how did you replace the backcover? by backcover im assuming you mean the lid of the laptop incasing the lcd and speakers.

also yea, viewing angle sucks for me from up/down, but is adequate left/right

the ones who complain ar ethe ones who complain about everything nothing to please them. just ignore them.

only thing i dont like about the xps m120 there isnt really a decent notebook case

Back cover and LCD were sent seperately. Back cover had broadband and wireless antennae and wires and speakers, all I did for that was transfer the camera over. LCD was perfect, no dead pixels and no more ripples and new back cover was a lot stiffer which will prevent the LCD from getting "dark spots" as I saw on my old Latitude X300 which had the weak LCD back cover that caused that issue... this issue is all over the Dell forums from a few years back. I wanted to make sure the same didn't happen with this system.

that definitely does sound weird about the bad quality of your m1210's first back cover, least they fixed you up straight and u were able to get it going.

My XPS has been good it's LCD is ok not great But all in a nice tidy machine.

BUT what does suck is Dell customer service :-

I bought the Dell in the States ( it arrived on my second to last day) and the restore DVD's were lost in transit by Air mail

So it should just be a simple matter to ask Dell for a replacement and pay a handling fee .. right ?

Wrong !!!

because I'm in another country they said i should ask the local Dell office the local office doen't have the english DVD's and they tell me to ask Dell (US)

Phone Dell (US) again and they state that they don't ship overseas ....

Arghhh .....

I'm liking mine so much that I just spent over $200 on a bag for it. No keyboard flex or screen problems here.

LOL....great clip!!
Yeah, situations like that make you want to tear your hair out!!

Thank you all very much for your comments & for voting. After reading so many positive reviews on CNET, Laptop Mag, etc. I was rather surprised & a little concerned about all the problems that were popping up here in the Forum.
Have been researching Notebooks for the better part of 2 months now & the M1210 is on my short list (along with the Asus W3J & A8JM).
I really need portability with some gaming power & these machines all fit the bill. I just haven't been able to make my mind up completely yet.
A major factor is the fact that I live in the Caribbean & if I have a problem with an Asus machine (although I understand that they are VERY reliable & well built), I will have to ship it back to the States at my expense. Whereas, If I go with Dell, there is a local Tech Support unit within the region & they can get the parts or replacement unit to me.

So please continue to vote & leave your comments folks. They are VERY helpful!!

Cheers.

Meh. I didn't even know Oakley made bags but I just looked at them and I'm not impressed. Oh well, I'm getting tax free money now so I'd thought I'd treat myself... (even though I already bought this expensive laptop... lol)

Ahh, SFBags (WaterField) sleeves are great. Have got a horizontal sleeve with flap for my 700m & was thinking about using it for my M1210 since after checking with them, it is the same size they're offering for the M1210. Tried it on the M1210 with extended battery yesterday, the length & depth are perfect but the breadth is a little short... It's still fine though after closing the flap. Note that the sleeve I tried on was bought for the 700m with extended battery.

The screen is just ok..after using a Sager 9880 screen the screen just doesn't compare. But now that i've gotten rid of it..i've gotten use to this one and its fine. You do have to play with it to find that sweet spot but once you do..looks great.

I haven't had any of the problems the others have...no screen rippling, no dead pixles, no keyboard flex. The palm rests stay pretty cool which im happy about...The bottom gets a little warm but i use my plastic mouse pad under it which happens to fit its demisions perfectly.

So far i've played Saga of Ryzom and Far cry and im very pleased so far in the power such a small notebook has. Wi-fi works great on it.. I really love the wi-fi catcher..was fun driving around looking for hot spots Its light weight, easy to move around..I think my only really complaint would be its a little thick compared with like the Sony models..but I think Dells CC warranty just makes this an even sweeter deal...

All in all ..im very happy with it..
