random bsod

i've had my e1705 for about 4 months now and i haven't had many problems. i'd have an occasionally bsod, but i never thought anything of it because they were few and far between. however today i got 2 bsods and i'm getting kinda nervous because i can't afford to replace anything and i don't want my computer to get ruined. so does anyone have any advice on what i should do?

i don't know the type of bsod or anything, but next time it happens i'll take a pic of it. thanks in advance for the help.

bump, can anyone help me?

Do you have any anti-virus and spyware detection software installed? Maybe scan the hard drive and see if anything comes up.

look in the event logs, under system. Around the time it rebooted from the bsod, there should be an event that mentions it rebooted from a bug check, and then have a stop error code, with four other error codes... should be event 1001.

sometimes it'll even reference a dll or exe that was at fault.

let me know the stop code or any other info you find from the event.

to 411sponge - yes i do, this morning i ran both and my anti-virus didn't come up with anything and i deleted everything that my spyware detected.

to cmarcho - the event is 1003, not sure if that's good or bad. also don't know if this means anything but under category it says (102).

also, after i report the error it comes up with this website: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response...ebafe4&SID=685

it says it's an error caused by a device driver but i haven't installed any new drivers recently.

Ok, so under the event 1003, where it says Description: what is in there? Should look something like this:

Event Type:\tError
Event Source:\tSystem Error
Event Category:\t(102)
Event ID:\t1003
Date:\t\t6/19/2006
Time:\t\t9:27:55 PM
User:\t\tN/A
Computer:\tLaptop
Description:
Error code 00000077, parameter1 c000009d, parameter2 c000009d, parameter3 00000000,
parameter4 007d7000.

i just noticed/realized that i don't have the latest drivers for my video card. while surfing omegadrivers.net i noticed that the newest driver on that side is newer than the one on my computer. is it possible that that could've been causing problems?

ok, a 100000d1 stop code could be just about any driver. If you are not using the DELL video driver, then that's where I would start. You mention omega drivers, so I'm guessing that's what you are using. Try the latest omega, and if you still get bsod, then use the latest Dell driver from their site. Look for any other non-dell drivers that you might be using for Wlan, sound, or whatever.

Most of the time I see a d1 it's video though, so try there first.

if it generated a memory dump, then perhaps I can debug it. look for memory.dmp in your windows directory, zip it up and tell me how big it is. I'll see if I can figure out an ftp site for you to upload it to.

other thing to try is to use the Dell WHQ drivers for video and stuff. what other hardware has been added that has drivers that didn't come with the laptop?

is the windows directory the windwos folder on your hard drive? because if it is i can't find memory.dmp. also, i don't think i have any other hardware that needed drivers when put onto my laptop that wasn't already there. edit: i used the search function to search for memory.dmp and it didn't come up with anything.

no problem, you may not have been configured for a dump.

to set up to get a complete memory dump:

1) On the Desktop, Right-Click "My Computer" and select "Properties".

2) Go to the Advanced TAB and Click the "Startup and Recovery" button

3) Under the "Write Debugging Information" section select:
"Complete Memory Dump" from the pull down menu

4) Make sure a check mark is placed on:
"Overwrite any existing file"

5) Make sure that there is a paging file (pagefile.sys) on the
System Drive and that it is at least 1.5 x RAM.

6) Make sure there is more space on the hard drive than there is physical RAM.

next time it happens, you'll get a memory.dmp file in the c:\\windows directory, it will be the same size as you have physical ram. If you have a gig, the file will be one gig.

it'll zip up pretty well though.

nope, that's about as good as it will get. If you want, zip it up with a password, and PM me the password.

I'll PM you back with an FTP site that you can upload it to.
