Is my MJ12m 7700 dead?

Hi, I'm totaly new to this board, but it looks good so chose to post here.

My problem is with my one year and something old AW MJ12m 7700.
Poor thing won't start up any longer, won't post, won't boot, actually there's no reaction at except for the lights.
Alien eyes light up, light around the power button, and the hd light (one that looks like an oil drum). The clock on the front display doesnt start up either.
The media jukebox thingy does actually work, so right now I've got $4700 cd player sitting on my desk at home.

Makes me think of the matrix... Why, oh why didn't I choose the 3yr. warranty.

Any one that can help, or has had similar problems?

Thinking of getting a replacement mobo (just think that that might be causing the problem).

Get myself one of these... http://www.rjtech.com/miva/merchant...._Code=MB-D900T

That's if no one knows what might be causing the problem.

Ya.. It is the motherboard. I hada Dell that fried and nothing came on except for the lights and the fan for a second.. It is probably fried.

Not so fast! My motherboard has done this four times now- all because the Ram was cooked. I'd take the computer to a computer store and swap some new ram before I did anything. This motherboard is VERY picky with its Ram, so it might take one or two tries. From what my local computer store tells me, these laptops cook memory all the time.

I can't say that for my M7700, just popped the ram in and good to go..

good luck

Thanks for al the help guys!

One thing I really hate with this machine is that it doesn't let you know when somethings gone wrong.
Like usually on any stationary comp (I've ever had) there's usualy a series of beeps if somethings gone wrong. Also you'd at least get the boot up screen.
Getting a bit P'd off with this thing now.

Btw. does has anyone tried Kingston or TwinMOS value ram on these machines.

Anyway cheers

Kay, know for a fact that it isn't the ram. Tried it in a friends comp. and worked fine.

Any other ideas what it might be?
Hvat would happen if the vga card was shot?

Please, need more help.

Thanks

Try reseating anything else you can. Vid card, hard drive, anything else you can think of. Have you tried an external monitor to see if the video is out and its actually loading BIOS?

Are you SURE, because I've had my laptop just over a month and its already fried a stock RAM card, I'd take them out one by one to see if that helps. Or if you want use the link in my sig and get you some run-of-the-mill RAM replacements for VERY cheap. I'm using it right now and seeing amazing improvements.

Once again thanks for the support.

I've tried out the laptop with my stationary screen at home with no effect.
I tried to move the ram around the four slots, first in single then in pairs but still nada.
As I wrote earlier, I tried the ram on my mate’s laptop which booted up at once.
My frustration for this not having some sort of boot up “beep” or a numeric disp. like on the mobo in my stationary (see picture).

One more reason for thinking it’s the mobo, is that the clock disp. in the front doesn’t come on when I turn on the machine.
But it does react in jukebox mode.

Nice price on those ram chips, only thing is I live in Norway, and unfortunately our f’ed up government puts 25% extra on anything over 200 NKR about $31.

If it weren't for that I earn far better pay, health care is better (and cheaper/free), less crime, better living standard and many more.
I might of considerd moving there.

But actually most hardware is just about the same price here as over there.

I thought were was a way to turn on a boot up beep in BIOS along with the clock display. My clock was not on by default. See if theres a "reset to default" in BIOS. (I haven't been in BIOS a while and forgot). I'm trying to think of other things, but not coming up with much.

Well, I'd love to do that.
Only problem being that I can't get into the bios, seeing as the computer doesn't
boot/post.

This is what happens when I turn on my computer:
1. Light around power button comes on
2. Light indicating hd (drum) comes on, and stays on
3. Alien eyes light up
4. I can feel the cpu heatsink get warmer, but the fans don't come on (no matter how long I wait, actually no fans come on)
5. I can hear the hds rev up and just keep spinning
6. Both optical drives start searching

And that's about it.

Hardware I know it can't be:
1. CPU tested on stationary comp OK
2. RAM tested on friends laptop OK
3. HDs not tested, but the machine would at least try to start up N/A

So that means it should be the vga card or the mobo.

Any one had a similar problem?

Skinnedbeanz,
My laptop suffers from exactly the same behaviour. And I had read similar posts in this forums. I would love to know what's happening so I could buy the fried components. The problem is I have no warranty so Alienware don't offer phone support to me to narrow down the possibilities.
I'm with you about the possible causes: MB or VGA card. But I guess a good motherboard with a wrong VGA would boot to bios at least. So I'm inclined to think that's the motherboard.
I have 4 diferent ram cards and I tried all of them one by one. No diference. I have removed hard drives (computers should boot without drives). No difference.
I'll keep an eye over this post as would be great having some info about this issue.
And even maybe an Alienware gentle soul will eventually apear and tell us something about this problem that seems to be common to a few users in this forums.

P.S.
c131frdave, why do you say it's the ram when you said in other posts that you had to replace your motherboard? Can you explain a bit more what happened to you?

I'm having the exact same issue as in Post #13, with one difference, after a bit my CPU fans come on and then a little while longer the GPU fan comes on.

Have a happy ending (with a sour taste) to this story in the end.

I decided I'd take a chance on that it was the mobo that was blown in the end.

Ordered a new on from RJtech and had it within two weeks.

Replaced my mother board and it finally works fine.

The only problem I have is actually just with the norwegian goverment and their toll policy.

The motherboard cost $480.00 from RJ, + $32.00 shipping bringing it to a total of $512.00.

Norway know as being one of the most expensive contrys in the world added an extra $100.00 to this in import taxes. Didn't help that the package was marked as used motherboard.

Hate this contry!

Another thing I've noticed is how many people have had problems with the Clevo D9T/D90T/D900T.

It's amazing how some companys still keep selling this machine and don't mention the fact of how fragile it is.

They tell you how you have to make sure the fans aren't blocked and make sure all the intakes are clean. But it doesn't really seem to be enogh. It's as if the fans in the machine aren't good enough.

There wouldn't be that many people screwing up their machines if the cooling solution was good enough.

Now to take all the prcautions I can I've used Artic Silver 5 on the CPU and VGA card, I've also downloaded the genious program GetThermal (a Sager? progam) that lets you regulate the fans manually (set those suckers... blowers... [you get the point] to full).
Cpu was at 44C now it's at 33C!

Anyway, still think it sucks that so many people have had the same problem, and nothing's been done about it.

You could just update the BIOS so you can hit Fn+F2 to turn the fans on 100%.
bolas is correct, with teh lastest BIOS you can press FN+F2 and change the speed of the fans o the fly no software needed
