M1210 Video card removal

Is it possible to remove the NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7400 video card an use the integrated card once you have purchased the laptop? I’m thinking that for long plane flights it would be nice to remove the card to get extra battery life. The reinstall when higher video performance is needed.

I'm pretty sure the video card is embedded directly into the motherboard... in which case it can't be removed.

just buy a extra battery . or do you like spending time taking it apart and making a paperweight out of it

Yeah, I could also fly first class and use their power My question was one of more curiosity. For example if the card was a 1 minute remove, cool; if it involves disassembly of the whole laptop then forget it.

If the laptop is built like Dell's other ones, you get a completely different mainboard if you order the discrete video. The integrated video board comes with the i945GM chipset (which has GMA950 built-in), and the discrete video board comes with the i945PM chipset (which doesn't have video built-in).

As a result, there's not actually any integrated video to use.

That said, when the Geforce Go 7400 isn't doing much (just 2d work) it's probably using a miniscule amount of power - you'd save more power just by lowering the LCD brightness a bit.

the gpu is built onto the motherboard, if you try to download dells service manuals you will see it. and think of the fact that this is one of the first 12 inch laptoptops with a dedicated gpu and memory they had to cut corners soemwhere.

for long plane flights you could always de clock the gpu so that it generates less heat, drop the screen brightness and throttle down the cpu.

you could always underclock.

ya a large amount of power is put into the backlight. You can also try using RMClock to maybe tweak your CPU's voltage down when its at minimum clock. Though this is unlikely to spare more than a watt or two because of how little power it's already using at min clock.

I think the dedicated graphics only uses 10% more battery than the Intel integrated does. Not worth the effort in my opinion. I get plenty of battery life out of my D820 with it's Quadro 120M.

But no, the graphics card in the m1210 CANNOT be removed.

I get around 3 hours on my six-cell battery, so a nine-cell should get about 4.5 hours... I have the 7400 Go... I read the integrated graphics last about 7 hours on nine cell, so that would be about 4.67 hours on a six-cell.

also take note that in the settings for the 7400go, there is the 'power mizer' thing that lets you turn down the power consumption at the expense of performance. by default the card is set to max power/performance. i haven't played with it to see how much it affects the battery life yet, i woudln't except it would be much worse than the integrated when turned all the way down
