Revisiting the 5672 upgrade (x1400 -> x1600)

So, for those who may remember, i had originally inquired about the availability of buying a new mainboard for the 5672 - as most may know, there are two versions, one with the x1400, and the new one with the x1600. Well, today, i called, and have found:

1) The mainboards are in stock
2) I can order them
3) The cost is $400 ($399) + shipping

And now i face my problem - what should i do? I have already upgraded my 5672 a bit, so she now has a yonah T2600 (2.16), in addition to the 2GB RAM and 120GB HDD package. The x1600 combined with that would certianly make a formiable match - I just have to ask if it is really worth it. I would love to play BF2 at a decent res/settings, but is that (and other games i guess) really worth it? Technically, i also risk my warrenty, but that is another issue.

So, what do you guys say? Would you do it? Is it worth plunking down $400 for an x1600?

I would say it's worth it only based on the fact you want to game with it. For a user like me, who does very mild gaming on the road, GPU isn't that important. To me i need computing power, so a CPU upgrade was well worth it as i'm sure you know

$400 is not cheap, no question about it. In your case, you don't need to worry about voiding warrenty as you've already done so (myself included). If gaming is that important to you, and you plan on keeping the NB for awhile, i would say the upgrade path is worth it. If this is just a stop gap between another notebook down the road, i would say stick with what you've got and suck it up with the x1400.

I might consider this down the road, but for now i'm pretty content with what i've got. I'm just so upset i paid more for this notebook several months back than they are going for now, and i got less =(

I'll be patiently waiting for someone to make this upgrade, i would love to see a writeup on it.

Its funny - i know i want this upgrade, but a part of me debates its practicallity. I know i would WANT to game with it, and given time i would. But in alot of cases, where i could be playing (school), is where i shouldn't be. Otherwise, i would just game on the lappy for the hell of it (since i already have a decent desktop). But the other part of me wants something that i know i can use on the road, and not miss my desktop (or more importantly, in the event of the failure of my desktop, keep right on going with work and life).

Warrenty-wise, i think i could still fib it, since i still have the 2300 that came with it (and could easily find some pink thermal goo to put on again ). But the mobo certainly would be a clincher (though, i would have that mobo for replacement if i needed it, so warrenty is not a huge issue anyway).

If i did get this, i would most certianly hold on to her for a while, simply because i would have dumped so much money into her (that, and i am playing it off for the next 16 months, so i might as well keep it...). Its jsut that dmaned cost really. If it was $200, i would be on it like white on rice. But since its $400... eesh.

Anyone wanna buy a mint condition T2300?

I definetly understand where you're coming from...

Another option might be to revert that one back to stock, sell it and hope that buying a new one will still be $400 or less to offset the cost of buying just a mobo. This would also bypass you neededing to hold onto a motherboard with an x1400 on it for no reason (chances are you won't ever be able to sell that). Honestly i don't think your current NB has depriciated by more than $400. Would be best to act now though, gonna be harder to unload next month when Merom starts rolling out. Financially that might be the cheapest route to take...

I have considered that, but -

Given that i want this to last as long as possible (regardless of this upgrade), and with no guaranteed overclocking yet, i would like to hold on to the 2.16 if at all possible. The 1.66 really does feel slower now, and will only feel more so in the future.

Then again, i could get the new mobo, and see how it performs with just the 1.66. If i like it, i could sell the 2600; if not, sell the 2300. Hmmm....

Well drop the 1.66 into that, sell it, hold onto the 2600 and just drop it in the new one, problem solved

I think that would be the easiest way to go about things though. The only hard part is getting a buyer for the notebook, and even that shouldn't be that tough. Just make sure you get no less than $400 under what you paid, and you'll completly offset the cost of having to buy a new mobo.

Interesting...

Not too sure what i would do. Selling the notebook would be a bit of a pain, since I am financing it, but i guess would still be doable. Damn man, no i am not sure at all.

I currently have the 5672wlmi w/the x1600. Will the T2600 be that much more of an upgrade from the T2300? Or would it be more practical to upgrade my RAM to 2Gigs? Also, is it relatively easy to replace the CPU's? Thanks!

It's a very simple swap. Search around and i've posted some pics of my Merom swap. If you can use a screwdriver, you can swap the CPU.

And yes, you're talking a 500MHz increase over what you have now. That would be a around a 30% increse in speed from where you're at now. That is very substantial.

2GB is good, but only if you use it. Unless you perform tasks that require a lot of files to load into RAM (ie: photoshop) then 1GB will do just fine. I would take the CPU upgrade before the memory if funds permitted me too.

Wow someone got somewhere well done divine
its a very expensive upgrade though, 400 bucks is probably half the cost of a new machine with a better card in it as well as merom etc

I gave up in the UK because their parts people seem uninterested in selling parts for upgrades.
So I am living with my x1400 until I can stand it no longer.
plus with my machine wearing out pretty quickly, keys becoming smooth (and no I dont eat chips over the keyboard ) and the finish wearing off the wristpads , left mouse on touchpad is flat.
I would see the upgrade as a bit of a no-go

plus early next year games coming out are gonna need a LOT more clout from the gpu

I think I will wait until end of next year and upgrade whole machine.

You look after it then! lol

I do look after my laptop, in fact it was the other week that my lid got its first scratch (I was gutted)
but it does get used every single day (almost) and gets used a lot
I suppose using the laptop keyboard for gaming isnt the cleverest thing, but you would have thought it would last a little longer than that
I plug in a mouse for playing games , so the left button flattening out is no excuse as thats only used for web browsing etc, when out and about

there is a lack of quality in the finish of the machine, which otherwise is a brilliant piece of kit

there has also been quite a lot of talk about this kind of problem on the inquirer and acers' support has been taking a bit of a hammering in the it press of late.
