NICE! New Gateway Turion 64 X2 model...initial impressions..

So, just played around with a Gateway MX3410 (don't bother looking it up on thier site, not a word about it for some reason). It's available at Futureshop in Canada with the following specs;

Turion 64 X2 TL-50 Dual Core 1.6GHZ
512 DDR
80GB 4200
DVD +/-RW Dual Layer
Nvidia Go 6100 (128 shared)
14.1 Ultrabright XGA
6-cell Li-Ion

$849 CDN

Found the new Turion to be VERY fast. Benchmarks apparently exist that rank it below the Intel variant but, from a basic computer user viewpoint, I couldn't tell.

Screen is lovely. For a $850 laptop, it's quite bright, has great uniformity and good colour quality. Looks very, very similar to the Macbook 13 inch screens.

The Nvidia 6100 is a nice touch. Obviously not a gaming card (outside of Solitaire) but it performed much better than the ATI 200M. I love installing my trinity (GTA:SA, BF2, and Oblivion) on these low end systems to see what happens. GTASA was very playable at 800x600, BF2 did well online at the same res. with all options set to low (with max draw)..thinking about 20FPS, and Oblivion ran at low settings, 800x600, with some chop but, surprisingly, did better than one would think.

Build quality on mine was mediocre. My laptop had a pronounced warp on the bottom right hand side and, as a result, sat about 2-5mm off the table at that corner. Other than that, it's very light and has a pleasing design and colour scheme. Looks much more expensive than $850.

Came boxed with reinstall of XP Home and an AOL coaster.

All in all, I really love this little guy. Pretty good muscle, nice video card (had HD playback features), and looks great. If I return this and get one without a warp, it's a 9/10...easy.

I hope there coming out with more turion x2 notebooks. I so hope there will be a 17 turion x2 with go 7950 with 512 mb, sorry i just wishfull thinking.
But i herd that if 1 core goes to 100% then the other goes to 100%, can you confirm if thats false in anyway?

Bestbuy has two Turion x2 models now:
Gateway

and HP:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1149207793457

Both are 14" models but the HP could better than the Gateway. It's about $70 more, but it may have a faster HD (5400 vs 4200), has an extra media reader, firewire, and it has the Go6150 instead of 6100 (not sure how much better performance but I'm guessing that the 6150 just has higher clocks)

Now I'm just praying that they do it right with the 15" gaming models

Forgot to mention that the HP model has S-Video out, comes with a remote, earphones, and XP Home instead of media center.

I'm tempted to get it, but that Go6150 is killing me.

if it was a 15inch with x1400 i would bet tempted to get it.

Now your dreaming
My dream turionx2 go 7950 512mb, 2 gb of m-ram, raid 0 160 2x80 at 7200rpm, battery that last 5 hours, 1900x 1200 display 17, good built in speaks with a sub and weighs 7 pounds.
wake up in about 3 years and your dream may come true.

I think I could settle for an X2 with x1800 128MB, 1GB, 120GB 7200 with 3 hours of battery.

i disagree the go 7950 and 5 hours might not be reality, but most of what i said is currect tech, just need some company to build it.

I also learned that turion x2, if 1 core is doing lots of work and the 2nd isnt doing anything but yet both cores use the same amount of power... dose let me down, but thats only on battery.

I sure hope you didn't buy that yet. I just bought this GATEWAY LAPTOP from Best Buy today for only $800 at regular $930. It has the X2 and everything. Def. recommend...check it out and tell me what you think.

Well 128MB shared video memory is a little WEAK for my needs and the 1.6 gig is kinda SLOW for me as well, Id pay the extra 500 bucks just for the 2.2gigs and the 265mb of V-ram, as it would REALLY fit my computing needs, but hope you enjoy your new toy

Well, its a typo on the site, its really 256MB (Shared) video

but besides that, i just wasn't sure how much $500.00 of a difference was to you. Have fun with the laptop.

Anyone have any idea how the new integrated video performs compared to the old mobility 9600 or even the x300-600? Bestbuy also has a model using the go6150 integrated but the same question still applies. I really want to upgrade my laptop soon, but that integrated video is killing me.

That cyberpower model is really nice, just wish it was an X2.

Really...........800 is not a bad price for 256MB of V-ram, wish it had 2 or more gigs in that CPU and 2gigs DDR2 Dual Memory....humm maybe I'll have to stop buy BB and look it over?
