I dont think you can find a brand new notebook with those specs under $600, unless you get a deal.

Keep an eye on these sites:

And wait for a good deal

you'll be very limited unless you expand your search to $800, or consider a Sempron CPU....they really aren't that bad (hell, beats a Celeron)

that makes me wonder what they're doing to that acer... a 7x5 series PM, but ddr2 ram... strange, i thought that combination doesn't work...

anyway, landlord, i wouldn't necessarily limit yourself to just those processors. i mean, if you can get a core duo for about the same price, you could have that option. it's better than a solo.

Check my sig. That was back in February. Prices have dropped. Not to mention, I got the 12 cell battery and the 2nd Turion 64 with the 1mb cache.

Academic pricing was only an extra $50 off that laptop. Prices have dropped on them since the Turion x2 came out. Current base price of the v2000z is $399 with free CDRW/DVD upgrade. This comes with 256mb DDR 2700 and 40gb 4200 drive. so $399 +$95 AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-34 (1.8GHz/1MB L2 Cache) (they took away the 512kb l2 cache one) +$25 for Brightview screen +$25 For 802.11g Wireless Comes to $544.99 . Not to mention he can remove Brightview if he doesn't want it. The 12 cell battery is an additional $39, still under $600($583.99). 60gb 4200 hard drive is only a $25 upgrade. Though, I'd rather sell the 40gb and get at least a 5200rpm drive, but some people don't want to go through the trouble. Then just buy a stick of 512mb off Newegg for $35 to $40 and he's set with a nice laptop for $600 or less, depending on the extra options he chooses. Heck, he could even just buy another stick of 256mb off Newegg for $20 to $25 if he's not concerned with space to upgrade to 1gb in the future. That doesn't include $50 off if he's a student. He could probably find similar deals at any other major manufacturer with a little work. Though Dell, he'd have to play the whole 'coupon game'.
