Acer Travelmate 8204 X-rayed

Here's an X-ray of an Acer Travelmate 8204 (the settings were 65 kVp and 7 mAs). You can see the dense Lithium ion battery cells in the top left, the DVD drive on the left middle, and the VoIP phone in the PCMCIA slot in the bottom left. The tip of the heatpipe overlies the ATI X1600, then swoops down and to the right over the CPU before curling up and to the right in front of the fan. The hard disk is in the bottom right.

Very cool
Thanks for that.

Very cool. I presume a chip next to ATI and CPU is north bridge while more dense (at least that's how it looks) chip between phone and HD is south bridge. It looks more dense probably because it has passive cooling heat-spreader on it or, more likely, because it's behind thin metallic touchpad surface. Ahh, that's what is heating touchpad that much

Yeah, I deduced the ATI X1600 chip from pin diagrams posted elsewhere. I don't know which is the North bridge and which is the South bridge. I guess if anybody knows the chip specs for size or the pin layout, we could figure it out. Or, for that matter, if somebody has taken apart their Travelmate 8204...

Thats a really cool picture!

but Does any one know what the small slot underneath the PCMCIA slot is?
The "blank" plastic cover thing is loose and just wants to fall out?

What is exactly in the lower right corner? I know there is a card slot...the strap on my laptop bag broke and hit the staircase of the train I was on, so I cracked the lower right corner and it's held together by a sticker.

Just an idea: Take it apart and use J-B Weld (epoxy) to fix it. I usually use a steel rod, (coathanger, or welding rod, or whatever I have laying around) trying to postion the rod in a crevice, or part of the casting, then overlay with expoy...

Awesome, but begs the question:

Just where and how exactly did you do this?

I had my X-ray physics lab on an old hospital X-ray machine. Several of us took radiographs of our notebooks. I have films of the Acer both on and off (the fan blades aren't visible while on), as well as of various other electronics. A friend of mine also did an exposure of his Mac iBook.

try to get the one of the ibook or anything else you may have...that would be friggin cool

Okay cool, do I need the rod in between the casing? even with a little gap the whole corner gets exposed.
