He has never heard of them. Please convince him otherwise with this thread. Thank you.

UM, what do u mean un reliable... being around sine 87, and being the top selling motherboards for the past 3yrs, 30milion sold in a year compared to 5-10million gigbyte etc.

This thread should help, another user was in your boat...

BTW doing laptop contracts to other major computer companies, MAC, Dell,HP etc.

ASUS is a household name for anyone that knows a decent amount about computers. They are mostly known for their motherboards, but they do EVERYTHING from barebones systems, to laptops to monitors, PDA's, MP3 players, etc.

They also built many of the apple powerbooks. I have yet to come across something made by ASUS that was of poor quality. Everything is made to the highest end of the standards.

Yep, they pride themselves on makin some of the highest quality and also having the best reliablity of any computer manufacturer out there.

ASUS is absolutely the best brand, if I need an electronics device, anything from cell phone to pda to computer i look at asus first, and recommend it to all my friends as well.

here are some of my ASUS experiences:

I build a gaming desktop for my friend using an ASUS motherboard, it was used and abused and overclocked for 3 years running almost 24/7...rock solid. When the computer was salvaged for parts the motherboard was still in good condition.

For that same friend I build his next computer 2 months ago, once again i chose ASUS as my motherboard, since I am his #1 tech support, I picked the highest quality parts because he is going of to college in August out of state, so I won't be able to easily "fix it" for him.

About 2 years ago I helped my friend build his own rig, I pointed him into using an ASUS motherboard, still running strong. Later that year together we rebuilt his friend's rig using an asus motherboard, as far as i am aware, still running great.

My brother is one of the least technical guys out there, when he was going of to college last year, I bought him an Asus Z71v laptop, it suffered a ram malfunctoin (kingston i believe, not ASUS's fault) and a year later the system has been flawless.

last year i was shopping for a new PDA and cell phone. I considered the Asus MyPal A730w, and I would have bought it if i didn't have a really and i mean REALLY good coupon from Dell for an Axim X50v (still great pda). For my cell, I was looking into the asus J105 see it here and it was one of hte most inovative phones of the day, ended up getting a Sony Ericsson V802 instead, but regreted it since.

moral of the story: time and time again i have come to asus for their products, and they have NEVER failed me. I will be retiring my Uniwill (specs in sig) next summer before i go off to college, and I can almost guarantee you that it will be an ASUS.

also as somebody said earlier, Apple's reputation for build quality is solid. Ever wonder why? Its because ASUS used to build their computers, now that apple switched builders....lets just say look at the "fried egg on macbook" thread

--------------------------------
now to go off on a little rant about something. Your daddy claims they are not reliable because he never heard of them, ok, lets get something straight.... quality != popularity in MANY cases. Here are some examples:

MP3 Players: You probably heard of the iPod, and the Creative Zen, but thats about it, how about Cowan Audio, or iRiver? I've had my iRiver for going on 3 years now, 1 player...perfect performance. In this same time frame my friends have gone through 2, if not 3 ipods because their previous model broke. (please don't start yet another ipod thread, simply pointing out my experience)

Headphones: I bet you heard of Sony, and Panasonic, and whatever the hell other crappy brands you can get at best buy. You also heard of BOSE, and you know them as a "high end" sound equipment manufacturer, they must be since their headphones are $300 to start. In any case, how about Etymotic, Shure, or Ultimate Ear? Haha..you're lost aren't you. All 3 brands build headphones with better sound reproduction than many BOSE models, I am not a general audio-equipment nut, but look in the "bose lifestyle theater" thread in in "Other Technology" section...you'll see that bose is not all they are cracked up to be.

this list can go on....point is. Just because you never heard of them, doesn't mean they are a bad company.

abf (who is from a NW chicago burb) hugs his Etymotic Research headphones that were designed and built in Elk Grove Village (a NW burb about 10 min away from abf's house). supporting local business FTW!

Asus is like the most trusted brand in computer building. back in 2000 when p3 came around it was asus mobo asus case asus cdrom asus everything. now its still like that. asus has the top motherboard top graphics and their laptops are very trustworthy. they also have good support

Yet another voice in the herd:

I've owned a bunch of Asus products, and they've all been solid. They're sort of like Panasonic in the gadget market, or Logitech in the peripherals market: not much advertising, not much flash, but they sell a rock-solid product and count on their reputation to sell their stuff.

your dad's a facktard who has no knowledge what-so-ever when it comes to computers. Why you're trying to convince him i dont know, let him live in his own stupidity. If he's buying you a laptop, then let him pay twice more money for a Sony with the same specs.

Show him this thread.

Asus is a very good company, im so happy with my s96j, and the build is excellent.

omg! i was EXACTLY in your shoes about two months ago. i know how you feel. just show him the asus website and show him reviews on asus laptops. thats what i did. i think its reasonable for a dad to be a little doubtful when hes about to $1000 or more on a laptop from a company hes never heard of. no need to call him a ****tard with no intelligence about computers. my dad used to work for viewsonic and knew a shitload of computers, but he hasn heard of asus either, until i bought my laptop. now he wants to use mine instead of using his 300 year old toshiba. so just show your dad what laptop you wanna buy, show him reviews on the laptop, show him the specs and compare them to sony and other "big name" brands... eventually, he will get that the asus, while having the same or better specs than most, is cheaper...

Also point out that a lot of 'known' manufacturers actually use Asus. Most of HP/Compaq's desktops use variants of Asus motherboards for instance.
