All Asus W3J Owners DO THIS NOW PLEASE! (screen test)

Okay...right click on the desktop and go to properties. Load the Windows Classic theme. Click OK and go back to the desktop. Look very closely at the blue background. Bring your head closer to the screen. Can you tell that it is not as "sharp" as it should be? If you can't, then I guess theres a problem with my screen? It looks kind of...fuzzy/grainy. This doesn't happen on all colors. I've noticed this on AIM as well when you have open an IM box with the backround of the box set to all black. You can see little white dashes all over the box. This however does NOT happen when I set my desktop background to all black. I don't understand what the problem is. The screen can't be messed up because if it was, this would happen on all the different colors. Does this happen because of the XGA resolution? Can it be fixed with the Asus Splendid Video Technology Program (which by the way if such a stupid/pointless program)? Please do let me know if you guys have this problem. Is it even a problem? Thanks in advance.

1. make sure your runnig @ correct res
2.Use the splendid video tech program
3. use the button on the right side of the laptop that has a monitor with a s in the middle of it

I remember there was a big debate on that grainy issue one of the forum, here or in notebook review forum.

I have a similar problem with my w3j, lots of clearer pixels, specially visible in grays, and I was looking for the thread (I saw it before buyng my w3j) where this issue was discussed but cant find it - can any one help?

nope i did all that. i think the asus splendid technology software is a piece of shit. it does no help. i still see visible specs of gray on certain colors. anyone have a real solution?

This is one of the reasons I returned mine. It had a type of overlay on middle greys and blues. Doing lots of texture work in photoshop made this unnaceptable. The colors were also a bit shallow, not very rich.

i had this "grainy" issue when i first started it up..but after the install is complete..and assuming you're running 1280x768 it should look noticeably better without any graininess at all

i have the "grainy" look to my w3j also. if u look close it looks like clusters of pixels that are rendering slightly different shades. so instead of a pure color of blue or gray, you get 2 shades mixed together in little clusters of pixels. first time ive ever seen this on a laptop. i guess its an issue with the LCD itself, because hooking up the w3j to my 2001fp monitor doesnt demonstrate this issue. kinda disappointing, but i'll live with it.

ok, i got a pretty decent picture of the problem.
the website is genmay.com
the dark color looks solid, the light grey and blue if you look close have clusters of 2 shades of blue or grey. to make the dark grey uniform i had to open the color control panel on the 6.7 cat control center and change gamma to .85 and brightness to 8. if i leave those settings at default, then the dark grey is mottled as well. i did the change to have a direct comparison in one pic. i believe this is what people are calling "noise" on the screen. i have tried the omega 6.5, default asus install cats, and the new cat 6.7 mobility, and they all have this problem. overall it gives the screen a kinda dusty appearance, not crisp solid backgrounds like there should be. for an otherwise awesome laptop this is annoying. someone please find a fix for this!

hate to say it but i don't think there's a fix. it's not splendid, i've got it disabled, and i don't think it's the graphics card or drivers. i'm 90% sure its the screen. i can even see it in games, and when i move around all the little speckles stay in the same spot. it looks like a coating on the surface of the screen.

anyways, doesn't bother me at all, just thought i'd put my 2 cents in. also dash your hopes of it being fixable

lol. thanks for dashing my hopes

Any idea if this screen issue affects the ASUS A8Jm too?

Thanks..

On another forum the conclusion that they seemed to be coming to was that this was an ATI driver issue. It affects other Asus notebooks and someone there swapped the screen with a previously unnaffected one and the problem reoccurred. So it can't be the screen itself.

Apparrently, this problem has been reported on other brands of notebook with ATI GPUs.

i've noticed when i turn the contrast up it decreases on some colors but increases on other colors. at default contrast that light brownish color in the windows default color set is absolutely horrible, especially when the screen is tilted back too far, it really shows up. as you adjust the contrast you can actually see the grain fading away, but it seems to make the default blue color worse. also you can tell the contrast is cranked, so its not as good to look at. but at least its likely a fixable problem

better start getting your hopes up again!

ps. where can i download catalyst mobility, the only download link on the ati page is a little verification package that tells me my system isn't compatible, which i would assume is only because asus isn't in the supported manufacturer list

@lord roddington

Could you please post a picture which details the screen issue.. I was really hoping the W3J wouldnt have hardware issues such as these.

TIA
i'll try getting one later, its tough to see in pictures. seriously its not bad at all though. when looking at the correct angle it doesn't really show up. it only shows a lot when you tilt the screen down too far. i'll try to adjust the contrast so its as bad as possible, i think that's the only way for the speckles to be visible in a picture.

my picture above is demonstrating the issue. as he stated, using contrast/brightness/gama/hue adjustments you CAN make the issue disappear in single colors. but the rest of the colors still have the noise as is shown in the picture i posted.
