Driver/Video Card Hell on m7700

Geforce GO 6800 Ultra 256mb ram Video card.

I've used several diffrent drivers, from the 3 latest from laptopvideo2go.com, the lastest listed on the alienware support site, and almost all other kids. I still freeze when playing games. The blue screens of death I have gotten have pointed to the nv4_disp file, have stated insufficient memory, or have said the device driver has been stuck in an infinite loop...but I'm not always lucky enough to get blue screens with hints, and usually just get locked up and have to hard reboot. I've had this for 3 weeks now and have tried everything I know, so now I come to you guys begging for help!

download Driver cleaner pro, i think you can find it at download.com
and boot into safemode after isntalling driver cleaner, and remove the
Nvidia WDM's (or clean basically) do that twice, and also goto 'Tools' tab and click 'Cab Cleaner' and remove the Driver.cab files (once again its actually cleaning) and then download the most current drivers from support.alienware.com and try again, if not it could be overheating, or a ton of other possibilities but since you said soemthing about BSoD saying something about the display driver it could be corrupt somehow, and even when you uninstall drivers they sometimes keep some core files, there is a slight chance some of those are corrupt oh and there is a Folder in your C:\
'AKA' your main HD with your OS etc, named Nvidia, delete that whole folder while in safemode too, and in control panel, add/remove programs and remove the Nvidia corporation file and click remove only the selected drivers and choose to only uninstall the display driver, do this before you boot into safemode, try that and lemme know.

I tried using the tweaks r us drivers, after doing the steps mentioned above to clean out the old stuff, and during the Tweaks R Us driver install, I got a blue screen of death blaming nv4_disp.sys. I will re-clean and try stock drivers tonight

Alright: I just decided to go with stock drivers from Alienware's support site, and still experienced a small system lock, then everything but video returns while video stays frozen (during games) so it looks like I took a screen shot. I would usually get this, and if I don't shut the computer down, after a few more seconds I would get teh BSoD referring to the driver as mentioned above.

Do you guys think I should reformat? Could this be system overheating? I mean, the card runs pretty warm, but what mobile Alienware card doesn't? I've already got a LapCool4 going as well...

I guess I wasn't alone with this problem, as today Tweaks R Us uploaded a new version of this driver which supposedly took care of the BSoD problem I was having. I'm going to clean out the older drivers and start with this one. I really hope this is the one!

After another run through with driver cleaner pro, I STILL get the BSoD while playing games with the Alienware Driver, the Tweaks R Us driver, and the Xtreme-G drivers. Maybe I'm jsut overheating?

Humor me and do the following: Start > Control Panel > Power Options > under the Power Schemes tab (should open here) find the first box titled Power Schemes. Select "Always On", hit apply and then OK. Some games require this to be set and I'm wondering if its related to the BSOD you're getting. Also, under control panel, go to Administrative Tools and then Event Viewer. Try to find events listed in Application and System around the times of the BSODs. Post what you can about them and make sure you've reported it to Microsoft and look at whatever pages come up. Sometimes simple solutions are the ones we overlook and actually turn out to work. I'm working for ya.

bad vid card?

Well, just to sort of give myself piece of mind, I started testing the card out on all kinds of other games and different settings and resolutions.

I was primarily only playing WoW before, and I was playing at 1920x1200 with almost everything on full (I figured I paid like 3k for this laptop, it better deliver!). This had been working for months, until recently. Anyway, the second I turned Anisotropic Filtering from Full to Half, I never saw this problem again (at least not so far). Everything else for WoW is still on full blast, and no problems.

Oblivion runs on nearly all resolutions and settings, albeit slower on the higher ones. Wc3 and Battle for Middle Earth 1 and 2 also run just fine.

So I guess something with the way WoW handles Anisotropic filtering was maybe screwingwith my card? Thoughts? I'm also back to using the latest Tweaks R Us driver.
Is there any sort of update you need for WoW? I dunno cuz I don't play it, but look into it.

Well, like most MMO's, you can't play WoW unless you ahve the most up to date version of the game. So, if I can get past log in without being required to download something, I'm running the latest version. Keep in mind, I'm purely speculating that it was the Anisotropic filtering, but I feel fairly confident on that hypothesis due to the heavy testing of my other games I was finally able to do now that I'm on vacation.

Anyway, thank you everyone for your helpful suggestions. I read this site now every day just to find stuff out about my laptop and the other Alienwares, and hope I can help someone out down the road to!
Keep reading. You'll see someone with the same problems you had down the road and can save them time and a major headache. Just keep hanging around.

Ok, well, I'm sadly mistake it seems about this problem being over with. I am STILL having the freezing/studdering/video locking issue with the Tweaks R Us driver, this time w/o Anisotropic filtering on. Just going to go back to the 7.6.5.0 driver again since that one is the only one that hasn't seemed to lock up yet. Thought I was finally in the clear...

I've read a lot about the Ultra 6800s overheating and causing damage to the card and even the rest of the laptop. It might just be time to call alienware with this one. I'm thinking its been damaged.
