HP Notebook Hard Drive upgrade - Page 2

Somewhat related, I've been trying to find out if the Multibay II device on the nw8440 is swappable (hot-swappable would be nice, but isn't necessary). I'm not sure, but it sounds like it was on the nw8420. However, everywhere I read about the 8440 seems to indicate that you have to get the external Multibay II adapter to use another device.

Even this page that lists (at the top) the HD caddy that fits the nw8440 says that it requires the external multibay adapter or the advanced docking station. It says that's not necessary with the nw8240 though. What the hell is this?

mine nc8430 came with a 80GB 5400rpm Fujitsu drive.... i replaced it with the Seagate Momentus 7200.1... the drive seems to be supported by the 'Mobile Data Protection System'... running hdtune gives an average transfer rate of ~38GB/sec with cpu usage at ~2.8%..

[[[ average transfer rate of ~38GB/sec with cpu usage at ~2.8%.. ]]]

i meant 38MB/sec of course...

So, if you run the HP Mobile Data Protection System utility, you can se the protection Enabled?

Could you please tell us what size is your 7200rpm Seagate?

Could this mean that Seagate disks are supported, but Hitachi not?
yup.. i see it as enabled..

the disk has 100GB storage.

Was this for your first or second drive? If I have only one drive now and add a second (with the Seagate), will that one be recognized?
i replaced the 80GB that came with it with a 100GB seagate... the new one is recognized fine.

How does this Seagate rate in the benchmarks and reviews compared to the Hitachi? I remember that the Hitachi is pretty much hands down the winner ni the 7200k category, but I can't recall where the Seagate placed.
you can google for some reviews... a few of interest might be:

... one thing i'm impressed with that may be worth mentioning is that this drive is really quiet...

So, what is some final conclusion of this thread? Hitachi hard drives are not supported by HP or what?
I recently upgraded an HP tc4400 laptop (tablet actually) that supports HP Mobile Data Protection with its original Fujitsu MHV2060BH.

Thanks to this thread, I knew to avoid the Hitachi. But I couldn't resist trying the Samsung Spinpoint HM120JI, which (for a 120GB disk) is $20 cheaper than the Hitachi and $30 cheaper than the Seagate and has similar specs to all.

The bottom line is that HP Mobile Data Protection says that the Samsung is supported. The drive seems to be working just fine. I haven't noticed any noise, but so far I haven't been in a totally quiet environment either.

any news on this topic?
i've got a TC4400 as well and would like to get a new HD for vista, do i'd like one with a working MDP - if possible with 7200rpm for better performance

UGH. ok this is weird... and i'm really glad i found this thread (although i see its been closed for several months now)

Ok, so i JUST got a tc4400 about a week ago. It came with a hitachi travelstar 60gb 5400rpm drive. so the travelstar MUST be compatible with the hp mobile data protection system somehow....

anyway, i am switching laptops with my dad (i had a dell xps m1210 before) and swapped the hard drives with it

The xps came with a hitachi travelstar 100gb 7200 rpm drive. so the same company and same series as the one that CAME with the tc4400... yet as the initial posted said, the drive isn't supported. i don't get it..... are there any tests i could do on the original (compatible) 60gb travelstar drive to see why it works? just tell me what to do and i'll be glad to check it out...

any other info about this problem now? or am i just SOL?

I just upgraded to a Western Digital Scorpio drive, WD1600BEVS - 160G, 5400 rpm drive from the original 80G, Fujitsu drive in my NC8430. The new drive is quieter, spec wise draws the same current (hence same power), and does not seem to run any hotter. It is also supported by HP's mobile drive protection (when you read the info on a potential replacement drive, look for something about automatic head retraction or parking or anti shock feature - the drives that have this feature should be compatible).

Just thought I would pass on info on a drive that works.

Nice to hear, thanks for sharing. Was the installation of this drive without any problems? I think I've never seen anybody who tried to install a 160GB drive into the nc8430.

Installation of the WD 160G drive went quite well. Used True Image to clone the drive (via USB external NexStar 3 case which now holds the Fujitsu). Swapped drives and everything was there, ready to run (after a single reboot to set the drive - SOP for Acronis True Image). My old copy of Ghost did not want to install - needed an older version of a driver, so I went with Acronis. Oh, the NexStar 3 case is nice too - it is aluminum, not plastic, and comes with the SATA cable, USB cable (with pass through). The instructions were very complete, including how to format and manage the SATA drive (not quite the same as an external IDE drive). Time to install was about an hour, but that included 'dead' time when I had some other things to take care of in the middle of the installation.

New to this forum. Just thought I would confirm Wayne_i's post regarding the Western Digital Scorpio drive, WD1600BEVS. I just upgraded my nx9420 from it's original 80GB Hitachi Travelstar drive to the WD1600BEVS 160GB drive last night. After cloning my original drive and a re-boot, everything works fine , and the HP Mobile Data Protection software says the drive is supported. This is nice to know since I have spent days upon days on the phone with HP tech support to find a drive larger than 80GB that works, which I never got an answer to.

I posted the same topic with same problem on notebookreview.com forums couple of months ago and surpise surprise, till now noone knew how to fix this problem.
I found this topic today and hope there will be a solution till the end of topic, but unfortunately there isn't any I guess, cause HP software/support department suck big time!
I'm big fan of Hitachi (former IBM) disk drives, got three 7200 rpm 2.5 ones in three laptops (two hp nc8430 and one thinpad r51), one 2.5 7200 in external case and three 3.5 ones in my desktop machine. No problems till today!
The fact that Hp's disk protection system (suspend system) isn't working on two 8430 ones and thinkpad's protection system does... there is no difference, cause shock protection and robustness of the drives itself is superb.

still waiting for solution to HP's mobile protection system though...

Granted, my puter isnt the NC series, but i have an HP, and i am running a 160 gb 5400 rpm Samsung Spinpoint M hard drive, and i LOVE it! its fast, VERY quiet, runs very cool too, and has never EVER given me an issue. ive had it in for about three and a half months now, and before that i was using an 80 gb version of the same hard drive, for about six months. same results. i REALLY like samsung hard drives, ive had a lot of good luck with them and they seemt to perform really well.

in fact, the 80 gb samsung spinpoint m i took out and replaced with the 160 is now in an external enclosure that goes everywhere with me too. love em. id definitely recommend them. newegg has the 160 gb for about $100 now, making it a terific deal.

Update: I've tried Seagate 160GB/7200 and WD 250GB/5400 and both are supported by the mobile protection system in my nc8430.
