Help with I8Kfangui v3.0 beta 5...

Just wondering how to get the fans to go back to being controlled by the OS...

It seems that no matter the temps, whatever I leave the settings at is what they stay at...

FOr instance, if all my temps are about 40c and i force fans on high, then turn them off of high, they stay on high...

if I manually change each fan to slow.... then turn off manually configure fans... they STILL stay on slow...

Does Dell just have high and low temp thresholds for when the fans change or is this version broken to where it won't allow dells drivers to control the fans after you change their status

Press the "Fn" key and "Z" simultaneously and it will let the BIOS resume fan control instead of the app.....

You have to go through and detect the fans/sensors that you have and do a little configuration on your own. Sorry I can't provide better directions, but it wasn't that hard for me and my m170. There was something that it did not detect, but once I had the sensors/fans setup correctly it works great.

Once you get that setup, go under "options" and then "temp control". From there, you can configure exactly how you want the fans to operate and at what temps to change speed. I think you can even link it to memory/northbridge temps, but that is kind of overkill if you ask me.

One big improvement for me is that I can control the CPU fan with GPU temps. It seems to help keep my overall system temp down and prevents the situation where my GPU would be smoking hot in a game, but the CPU was still cool and happily chugging along with slow speed fans. Now when the GPU gets hot, the GPU fan kicks on fast (70C) and if it continues to rise (80C), it kicks on the CPU fan in fast regardless of the CPU temp.

A bit noisier, but I like it overall and am impressed with it vs v2.2.

This doesn't seem to do anything on my M1710, my bios is A01.

Anyone else have any other ideas or having the same issue?

Basically, if i force the fans to high, then turn that option off, the fans will stay on high even when all the temps are even in the 30c range...

Press "Enable Temperature Control" and then turn it off and BIOS should control fans again.

Will try that thewird, thanks much.

Also, real quick, I'm lazy... is the first fan CPU and 2nd fan is GPU for the M1710? Just curious... thanks in advance

Yes that is correct but keep in mind that the M1710 has dual-pipe for the GPU so the CPU fan slightly helps the GPU as well.

thewird -

Just tried that out, put the fans off, checked and unchecked temp control, then started the game Prey, played it for about 15 mins and closed it, the GPU peaked at 83c , and both fans were off....

I turned temp control on, they went to high, then turned temp control off, and the fans stayed on high... the GPU is now below 50c and the fans are still on high (with the temp control box being checked then unchecked), so this does not seem to allow bios to re-control the fans that i can tell...

If you want the BIOS to control the fans, you have to set it to observer mode. I thought you only wanted to turn the fans off from high.

Ah okay, yeah I was wondering why BIOS would not control the fans after I was running fangui, even after I turned off fan control,

question though - i'm now r unning it in observer mode and the GPU is reporting from fangui at 61c (69c in nvidia CP) and STILL neither of the fans are running.... is this the way dell intended?

Does dell wait until the GPU is above 70 to start the fans?

Just sitting here wondering what 95% of the people who buy an XPS and do not have any way to control the fans, their hardware will be running very hot all the time, i can't see why dell would rather stress the GPU with heat instead of just have the fans come on and stress the fans instead....

I am wondering this. Also, what is the best temp settings to set to in temp control. I have the 1710 with the 7900 GS and I currently have the fans kick to fast at 51c on the GPU. Does that seem good? Looking for the best medium without addin the strain to the cpu/gpu fans.

Yes, Dell defaults are horrible. The CPU fan only kicks in at 75c. Not sure about GPU.

I'm now starting to wonder if either this video card idles extremely hot or my BIOS is moronic. I've been just testing it out a decent amount and my GPU at complete idle sits around 73c, this is not even during gaming. Also, no fans are on.... i think it's about time to call dell... because i'm pretty sure my GPU should be idling in the 50c range...

if the fans aren't on, the idel temp will reach 70c slowly

Those are Dell defaults, mine runs exactly the same.

Yes, Dell fan control is ****en stupid!! I have a E1705 with a Go 7800 non-GTX and with the OS/bios controlling the fans the GPU will reach 80C, without ANY games running, before the fans kick on. Dudes, your best bet is to adjust I8Kfangui to properly cool your shit. Unless, you want to go through some Dell hell after your shit breaks because it burned up. Then have dell send you a replacement that does the same shyt! It is up to all of you but me I would much rather pony up $20 and give it to the creater of I8Kfangui and say thxs bro for making a kick ass little app that saves me time and money in the long run.

I have I8kfan set to "auto start" second fan only on slow. The app is set to quit after starting fans. This does great for day to day stuff. My OC GPU sits around 50C the CPU around 30C.

Now I find that when gaming, with my simpo settings, the temps shoots up, then the bios kicks first and second on slow and I8kfan bows out. After gaming I'll restart I8kfan to surf or simply shut down for the night. If I don't touch anything, the dell fan bios is at default temps.

These settings work great for me as i don't have to futz with the temp control stuff but whatever floats your boat.

I'm wondering if the idle temps that I see reported for the 512MB 7900 Go GTX are WITH both fans running on slow....

With both fans running on slow my GPU idles right between 51c-52c... with both fans off it seems to level out about 68c...

CPU seems to idle about 23c with both fans on slow (!) , with both fans off it sits right around 46c...

I think i'm just gonna configure I8KFANGUI to keep on slow for both fans... because high 60's with bothfans off is unacceptable...

That sounds right. Even though you have daul pipes, your GPU has a higher heat buget. My stinky old 7900 is reported to be a 20 watt part?

What happens with just the second fan on low for day to day stuff?
