357Magnum's mALX review - Page 2

yea thats interesting... double check your turion drivers like people have suggested and then also make sure that its plugged in, because from what i understand, when running on battery, only one of the gfx cards operates by default.

we know both his cards are working...he would not get a 10,000 3D mark with one 256 mb card...that would be absurd. When i initially spoke with AW about purchasing the mALX, they told me the same deal. They said the mALX is not that much more powerful than the m9700. Perhaps his scores are normal...

WOW!! That is the nicest laptop I've seen! Awesome paintjob. Enjoy that beauty. Thanks for the pics!

I doubt the fact that it is a 19" screen makes much difference in the benchmarks if everything is being run at the default 1280x1024 res used in the free versions of the 3DMark programs (someone will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong).

But, I still don't think the scores are that low. The 3DMark05 score is great...and no doubt is due to the high end video cards. The 3DMark06 score is also quite good. '06 gives a much higher score for dual core processors, and my understanding is the Turion ML-44 is a single core processor - comparable to a higher end Pentium M. It would be interesting to compare the individual component scores to (e.g. CPU, Graphics...).

Go to add/remove programs and see if the Athlon driver is installed.

If it is, then remove it, then restart computer and install the turion driver.

That raised the benchmarks of the m9700 about 300 or so. and isnt the 19" malx a lower resolution?
1920 x 1200 <-- m9700 (most users configured this screen with their order)
1680 x 1050 <-- malx
I will give this a try tonight Kazkek thx.
And thx to everyones input. I appreciate it

First. FREAKING SWEET LAPTOP MAN!! that thing is awsome.

2. please check your cpu driver, we have seen an increase of 400+ points on a 3dmark05 after installing the correct driver.

3. even still, your scores should be much higher.
Do you have SLI enabled?
open the nvidia control panel and check "SLI & Multi GPU" make sure its enabled. I'm pretty sure it is, most benchmarks with a single 7900gtx are around the 8000's

4. (i bet this is it)
what were your preformance setting set to? by default, its set rather high, and you want the lowest possible settings. check the nvidia control panel and "preformance settings" there is a template for 3dmark. but make sure you quality setting are set to max preformance (default: quality)

hey said my 3dmark scores were Normal. They said you won't see giant differences in scores between the m9700 and malx cause the malx has the 19" screen and has to work harder.
I don't know?

I'm really sorry an AW rep said this. this is 100% false, not a lick of truth...

Holy cow thats a nice rig!

makes me even more antsy to get my new notebook, even though not an alx, still

marker01 is right, 3dMark05 runs at a standard resolution, so the screen size won't matter at all in the final results.

I would have expected the mALX to score in the 11k to 12k range on stock settings with dual 7900gtx cards.

I would make sure you have the correct processor driver, shut off vsync in the advanced settings, set AA and AF to application decides, then reboot the machine and run 3dMark05 again. You might also want to change the video settings from quality to performance.

Wait thats helped you on your computer? I get a worse score when i do that both with nvidia and ati. I got the best score when i have it set in the midle.

It helps my desktop increase the score a small amount.

Ok, thx guys. here's a snapshot of my add/remove panel and my nvidia control panel. It does indeed look like I have the wrong driver installed. Is it ok to d/l and install the driver Kazek made a link to. I wont mess anything up right? and second I found the 3dmark templet and you were right it is set to quality so I will change to max.
I will run another test and post results

Kazek and Marker. I removed that athlon 64 driver and installed the one you linked. This is what I show now. I don't see anything that says turion driver. did it load ok?

Ya of course it is. We all did it. When you click the link it is an automatic download for the turion processor.. if you dont trust the ling you could go to the AMD website and go under support or download

Just uninstall the Athlon driver, then reboot, then install the turion driver, reboot, then run 3dmark once again.

Yup! That is what I have/ 3dmark! 3dmark!! I want to see your scores!!

this guy named "fast lappy" got his 5950, he has it with sli 7900 gtx's 512 mb, and he only get 10800 so i guess sli 7900 gtx over sli 7900 gs isn't as big of a performance gain as i thought, but remember. 3d marks are just synthetic (i think thats how you spell it) benchamrks, gaming performance is all that matters (i.e. fps, etc.)
Okay, dumb question for when I get mine... You uninstall the processor driver that comes with it first? Then you install the other processor driver?

*has never screwed with processor drivers before*
post #40 of 113
Yup.. doesnt mess up anything when you uninstall it.

It just lowers the speed of the processor.
