So, 357, I have to ask. Are the mALX speakers decent at all? And how does its 'tv tuner antenna' work?

Haven't had a chance to us the tv stuff yet. As far as the speakers, they sound kinda tinny to me. I have'nt played around with them to try adjusting the base. But the Ozma head phones are Awsome! They sound exellent even with the onboard sound card. I haven't even installed the audigy pcmcia card yet.

mALX alien head

Here's a pic of the alien head. I wasn't aware that it lit up. You could not tell from the web pics.

Even the AW tech guy I talked to wasn't aware they lit up.

Okay, so I'm getting a bad vibe here.

I started my tech career at AOL (yeah yeah). Used to be, AOL would put you
through three weeks of tech training. This involved things like basic tech, a
whole week on modems (this was back in the day), and a week on internet
and the AOL software. They then put you on the floor with a database of
common issues and how to solve them to fall back on. It became
commonplace for folks to get hired, go through the training, spend a few
months on the floor then quit and get better jobs. This got expensive for
AOL, so they killed the training and just taught new recruits on how to use
the database, so you started getting logs of wannabes on the phone who
couldn't troubleshoot their way out of a wet paper bag.

That said, how can someone whose job it is to troubleshoot problems with
the laptop not know about one of the coolest little doodads on the machine?
Have these guys not even laid their hands on one?

[set rant = "off"]

There, I feel better.

I have a 5950 for about a week now....Had an alienware malx on order for 2 months and cancelled. They told me it was going to be a few extra days to make sure they would send me a perfect laptop. I told them no problem, and it took 7 days to ship ( a hell of a lot better than 2-3 months!!) and it is absolutely flawless....no dead pixels, dvd drive works 100% and 512mb 7900gtx's perform perfect. No, it doesn't have that flashy paint job, but I really like the silver and it is a high quality job....not like a hp or dell. But, I also saved over 1000 bucks and didn't have to pay extra for the 512mb cards. If you are looking at the malx and they are playing with you on the lead time I seriously reccommend you give powernotebooks.com a call. I also purchased the sound blaster audigy on e-bay for 50 bucks shipped! You can pc together the package with better headphones for much less and no issues out of the box!

They have samples of most of the AW lines available at the call center for support people to help with troubleshooting, but I'm sure the mALX is dear, and they don't have one at the call center.

With an mALX though, I would think you'd be dealing with an ALX technician. They have their own unit, and the guys that build them do the support, so they should know.

Then again, the mALX is different. It doesn't have the rubberized eye grips like the rest of the laptop line. The mALX grips are airbrushed on. Perhaps since this is a unique case treatment the phone tech didn't want to guess...

in my opinon the malx is wat 2 heavy and expenisve it also is not even a note book its so big is a fu**ing deskstop but it workd very well in your case it doesnt.

Sorry to hear about your problems mag. My friend just got his mALX today and I have to say that sucker is f ing beautiful. The paint job is like looking at a multi-colored jem. On board sound quality is superb with no subwoofer buzz what so ever. I also got to play FEAR maxed out. With an average of 89 fps the game looked better than it does on my desktop. The notebook ran cooler than I expected with the right side getting a little hot (where the GPUs are) heat did not transfer to the keyboard. Hot air came out the right side and back.

With all its beauty I'm still glad I got the m9700 because damn that sucker is heavy. I'm not a very big guy and I would NOT want to lug that thing around a university campus. The backpack is fricken huge man. I mean huge as in it looks like you are going camping with that thing on. I should get my m9700 either tomorrow or the day after.

Stay tuned for the head-to-head review of the m9700 vs the mALX

Woot! My mALX just went to Phase 5 this morning after almost 3 months at Phase 3. Looks like they are finally building the thing.
