First Laptop Going to be Bought, Help me!!

Hello ,
I am planning on buying a laptop in early to mid august and I have a few questions I wanted to ask.

Q1, Well I haven't totally decided that I wanted a laptop so I was wondering if laptops are acually starting to compare up to desktops?

Q2, What laptop should i get!?! I want to be able to play games like, S.W.A.T, WOW, CIV 4. I want atleast 4 hours of battery life, and the able to run all these things smoothly. I was thinking ACER, what do you all think?

THANKS so much for all your help in advance.

I can't wait to get a laptop

EDT: sry I didn't tell you my budget, it would be around umm 1 thousand to 1 and a half, thanks much

Acer is good only if you want to save some money but from my experiance they aren't well built. Am I right to assume this laptop is for a first year college student? If so I would recamend something under 15 inches. Asus has some nice one that would game well, especialy the W3J. If your willing to go pretty small I would go with the Dell XPS M1210. It's 12incher with GeForce 7300 and would be capapble of playing the games you want. Another nice notebook with dedicated graphics is the Sony SZ series. All of these notebooks can be had within your price range

Smaller laptops require more money for less power. I'm in college, I take my 15.4" Acer Ferrari to class for notes. It's not too big, it's not too small. I had the Sony SZ for a couple weeks and found it to be too small for me. I returned it for my Ferrari and I'm quite happy with it.

Like said above, Acer's build quality isn't that great(read good, but not Sony/Toshiba/IBM good)...unless you're buying their top of the line laptops. My Ferrari is extremely well built...no flex, sturdy, high quality feeling.

I would get the Asus W3J. That is an awesome laptop. If you want to game, you'll want atleast a midrange video card. So a Mobility x700, x1600 or Geforce 7600, 6600 should be as low as you go. The x300, x1300, x1400, 7200, 7300, 7400 will run games, but you're not going to be at full settings and they won't fare as well in the future.

Your highest demand is 4 hour battery life for games. I don't see that happening. Maybe if you get a lower end video card and a slower cpu...but that's gonna be tough. Perhaps if you bought a laptop where you could add a second battery...then you should be able to achieve 4 hours.

The problem with the W3j is that it costs $1800

I recommend the Asus S96j, a nice setup will cost about $1300 or less.
