Oh boy, Now what to do. Meroms on it's way.

According to the latest reports merom's going to be out in next few weeks. Mid-August at the latest. Now do we wait, or buy? Or the better question is, will the laptop we want be available in Merom or will we have to wait anyways? Maybe us students should wait until the last minute to get a laptop this year so we can have the best performance possible. I want to get the Macbook but will they be available with Merom by say Mid-September? Personally, I kinda doubt it. Apple has been slow in the past at revising exsisting products. But then again they have been able to completely switch to a whole new architechture in only a year and have made software to go with it so maybe things are turning around at Apple.

well i just bought 2 laptops. that way i can use them now. when merom comes out and reviews look good i'll just sell mine for less lose some money but hey i get to use them during that time.
Yeah u can use it now, but is it worth all the money u would lose. If u got somethin decent right now, then hold off. When merom comes out, the yonah prices will plummet and ur gonna get very little for ur laptop, and then have to pay premium for brand new technology.

If Merom was say 4-6 months away, I would say dont wait. But an extra month or so is not gonna be hard, and just more time to save up. This of course if u got somethin to hold u over, like an older machine.

I'm in the same boat. I've been looking for a new laptop but held off pending review on the Merom. So far it looks good...at least the Core2Duo processor do. If its going to give me a longer battery life due to the decrease in power use, then the wait will be worth it. But the drop in price for the CoreDuo laptops has been very tempting.

If you can wait then wait because its not long now and the performance of the desktop version "conroe" has been very impressive. Merom (core 2 duo) will be awesome...

If you desperately need a laptop right now for whatever reason then get it because the cpu should be upgradeable to Merom when its released otherwise wait for it.

plus arn't some laptops (at least the one I'm getting, Compal HGL30) upgradeable to Merom? So buying the right one now would mean just a simple send-away or even do it yourself swap over.... or has thatsince been found a bogus marketing scheme?

I must be way behind the times. Always thought when we buy a laptop we're stuck with what we bought...that its not upgradeable. I'm amazed companies are offering the upgrade option nowadays.

gaetano, depending on which reseller you order from and warranty policies, you might be able to do it yourself, but most likely will have to ship it in and pay for labor fees (since it is not a defect) and parts cost (which will not be the cheapest price).

Compal's bios are already merom ready as shown in NBR when XoticPC installed a Merom on an HEL80. Im pretty sure him and Powernotebooks are willing to upgrade your computer to Merom and it'll still be within warranty

The right time to buy a notebook is always when you need it. Fact of the matter is that new technology and price drops will always be just around the corner.

If I wait a few months, I can get a Merom.
If I wait a few months after that, nVidia/ATI will have their new mobile part out.
If I wait a few months after that, AMD will have their new mobile part out that will lower Intel prices
If I wait a few months after that, a new battery technology will be otu that extends battery life by 15%.

etc etc etc ad infinitum. If you can afford to wait an unknown number of months for the performance boost of Merom, then do it. Personally, I say buy now... laptops are about mobility, not about raw power (otherwise, you'd look into SFF desktop machines for raw power).

Look at this. It seems Merom is out the door of one of Intel's fabs. Thursday will be the formal anouncement of both Merom and Conroe. Still don't know if I should wait. Right now I am computerless and it makes me sad having to use other people's.

You must also consider that you gotta wait for those chips to make it into laptop models, for those laptop models to go into production and get distributed, etc.

This cycle never stops. Buy when you need it.

I actually think most laptops are upgradable to merom, so if you need a laptop now, you could just buy one with core duo then buy like merom off of ebay and then put it in. Because core duo and merom are the same socket so on most laptops it should work.

lol i can probably get a merom for free. dell complete care ftw. oops i spilled water on my laptops oops i get new one

I love these posts when they come up. No offense to anyone here but I doubt Merom is going to reinvent the PC as we know it. It is just a newer CPU with a minor performance upgrade. In reality, it is just more cycles for your PC to do nothing with 80% of the time. Use Task Manager sometime and take a look at the CPU Time value for System Idle Process. All this fuss over CPU speed and being bleeding edge is just a waste of money for 90% of the people out there. Unless you have some need for major CPU performance just don't worry about it. Also keep in mind that even most compilers today are more disk IO limited than CPU limited.

Just my two cents.

pretty big % increase but not singificant enough to change. if your a hardcore laptop gamer than you might want to upgrade. if your not just wait until it comes out and buy core duo cuz the prices will drop

then dell says "oops, we still have some of the same model as yours in the outlet that are 'previously ordered new' with the same specs. (a week passes)... here you go."

to bad i dont have any warranty on my 700m. i wonder what it would be replaced with once merom is the mainstream processor...

Intel (and Dell too) have huge stocks of the Yonah cores (Core Duo) available. They'll probably still produce them for quite some time (Intel's still making 186s, 386s, 486s, Pentiums, Pentium IIs, and Pentium IIIs for the embedded market).

Quite apart from that, spilling water on your laptop might damage the mainboard and keyboard, but probably not much else. Dell would just replace those parts (probably taking a few weeks) and then send your laptop back with the old CPU in it.
