Dell OS reinstallation CD

Thread Starter
for some unknown reason,
i had dell send me out a new OS reinstallation CD, originally it came with MCE and they sent me out XP Pro sp2,
if i want to reinsall how would i do it without a key, assuming that my MCE key is different from XP Pro? or do i just wait and have them send out another disc?

then, is this new disc worth (financially) anything?

are dell discs worth (financially) anything?

Just call them back up and tell them if they don't send you an MCE disk, you'll call a manager and complain.

It's usually pretty easy to get new Cds from dell

Threatening to complain to a manager would be excessive. Just ask for a set of CDs that you should have gotten with your system. They'll send them out without a problem.

so for the CD of XP Pro, that i have, is it any use to me? if so how would i find a key for it?

The disk itself isn't worth anything without a key. OEM licenses are tied to the original hardware they were installed on. Those licenses live AND DIE with that hardware, they cannot be transferred to another system legally. The disks are just media, it's the license/key that you need to buy.

Shh.... dont tell anyone, but i've successfully used a Dell Windows XP Pro cd to install on a dell computer that came with Windows XP home. And it didnt even ask for a key.

Do they even ask for a key when install?
My OEM doesn't.

I have an MCE2005 DVD I'll trade you for the XP Pro

From the Windows XP pro manual that comes with the Dell reinstallation CD:

"The Microsoft operating system Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is a multicolored label located on the side or bottom of your computer. The COA contains a product key code, which might be required to complete the operating system setup"

I think you would be violating "just a few" laws! ( and that's not a middle finger, just a nono)

ok well here is the skinny

1. Windows installs on a dell don't ask for a CD key if its a dell disk
2. It won't install properly or legally on a non dell system (prompts you for a key)
3. Dell monitors these forums heavilly
4. I doubt you can make much if anything seeing as how there are coppies of those disks floating all over the net

Dell has made it that when you install a Dell labeled OS disk, it will never ask you to activate the software. The disk has some tweak in the install that knows that you are running an authentic dell. And what that means is that if you have a Dell XP Pro disk and a MCE license, the Pro disk will install just like you had it naturally. No questions asked. No key needed.

This also works with every version of XP. home, pro, mce...

Yeah..... Their are actually 2 keys on the disc. One is under "Unattend.txt" and the other "WINNT.sif". One of the keys is garbage, the other is the actual OEM 'no-need-to-activate-windows-garbage-security-feature' aka the key of all keys......
