PLZ Help - M3450 dual core questions & AW general questions before I order one up

About ready to order up a M3450 seems like the perfect balance of performance and size for me. I am looking for something strong and solid performance wise yet not 8+ lbs to do mainly office, games like microsoft flight sim 2005, rollercoaster tycoon etc (not super new high end games), digital photo manipulation, web design, surf web, burn a dvd or two etc.

Had a few quick questions since this dual core stuff is all new to me, would a dual core really perform much faster on multiple tasks than a single pentium M chip? I was very close to ordering up a M3200 sentia but was a bit afraid it might be too small in person and the pent M vs dual core on this M3450 makes it seem like the 3450 would have more punch on performance and ram speed and that 14 inch screen on the 3450 would probably actually fit my needs even better size wise.

I also am curious would i see or feel a difference between

Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2300 1.66GHz 2MB Cache 667MHz FSB
&
Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2400 1.86GHz 2MB Cache 667MHz FSB

I was thinking of upgrading the processor vs upgrading the ram, then adding a stick of 1 gig on my own later (thinking in my mind it is probably easier to upgrade ram later as a customer than to attempt to upgrade a processor in a laptop). The step up from 1.66 to 1.88 is $100 currently on aw page btw, the next step up is an additional $150 so $250 more to go from a 1.66 to a 2.00 dual core, so I will probably stay away from that (due to costs) wife is already not happy with my first few priceout sheets.

Also question on AW in general, why is support for 2 yrs $200 more than support for 1 yr? Do these things have a high tendency to break at the 1 yr mark?

Also, hard drive wise, thinking of just getting the standard 5400 rpm 40 gig (plenty of room for me) but would like a 7200 rpm drive just for speed reasons, the only option they offer on this model is a 100 gig 7200 rpm drive for $175 upgrade price, who makes the hard drives in these and will I notice a 5400 vs 7200 in a dual core laptop?

Alien Autopsy - is it worth it or bunk? ANyone use it - what happens?

Alien Respawn - I don't even SEE this option on the M3450, do I get any sort of restore disc with this? I WOULD add this feature if they had it cuz restoring to orginal is nice sometimes to just wipe things off and redo, but I don't even see it as an option on the M3450, so what do I do if I want to wipe and start over, AW doesn't include OS disc or anything do they?

Thanks for any and all help on this, of course I spent time online with tech support live chat who was very slow yet was very incomplete answering my questions (saying stuff like "get the fastest processor available for maximum performance") ok duh I get that part, but just curious on some of the above stuff.

Also asked them about color choices got the standard reply that I have seen for literally months (no news on that yet).

Here's my 2 cents. For reference purposes, I have the m5500 with a 2.0GHz Pentium M CPU, and a MacBook with the 1.83 CoreDuo Intel CPU.

CPU: I'd recommend the $100 upgrade to the 1.86GHz CPU. This seems like a reasonable price to get a bit of a saftey net. I can say that the 1.83 in my MacBook is plenty powerful enough for all the applications you mention - and it is faster than the 2.0 Pentium M when running multiple apps.

RAM: Definitely order minimum RAM and then add RAM yourself from somewhere like Newegg. I'd think you will want a minimum of 1GB, but in the end, you'll be happier with 2GB. I'd order at least a 1GB stick now which will give you 1.25GB (and yes, it's better to have matched pairs, but you'll still get a boost with this config). Then, you can always add 1GB later.

HD: 40GB is, I think, too small for most people. Especially if you are going to have photos and music on it. Rather than go for the 7200RPM drive, I'd up it to either the 80 or 120GB 5400 drives. These will be faster than the 40GB (higher density), and most likely still plenty fast for you. I've got a 60GB drive on the MacBook, and don't notice any significant slowdowns compared to the 7200RPM drive on a previous system.

You're right about Alien Autopsy - haven't heard much good about it, and I didn't get it. Ask them about Respawn - I see it is available as part of the bundle special, so probably just a mistake on the website. There are other ways to image the HD when you get it, so this isn't a major deal.

Warranty: I'm probably in the minority, but I can't see paying 15-20% of the cost of the computer for a 2-3 year warranty. It definitely makes sense for a $4,000 machine, but I'd take my chances on something like a Sentia. Also check to make sure you don't have a credit card that doubles your warranty period. This is personal preference - I'm not saying to NOT get the extended warranty, just that I'd have a hard time with the cost of it...

Gaming on the Intel 950 graphics...I don't know for sure if you can play the games you mentioned on the integrated graphics, but chances are you can. Many people will say you can't game with this set-up, but I know I can run Guild Wars on the MacBook (under Windows), as well as a number of other games. So, you should be okay with it if gaming is not your primary need - for that, I'd go with the m5550.

About colors...I think it would be a longshot to wait for more options. Hopefully, AW will get back into offering more colors - as that's a great selling point, but I'd be surprised if it happens in the next few months.

Good Luck - I'm sure others will chime in with their views as well.

FTLOSM, I got your PM. My Sentia is scheduled to ship by the 25th of July. I'm not holding my breath, but it would be nice. I had a CSR tell me it probably would not go out on the 25th. Not a huge deal.

I went with the 2.16Ghz processor and 2G of RAM just to be done with it. I don't really like taking things apart that aren't cheap to replace.

If you can handle the price, I would go with the biggest HDD you can get. Its better to have more space and not need it than it is to need it and not have it, IMO.

As far as Respawn, mine is coming with it. At least my order shows it coming with it. I figured it would be good to have it just in case.

I also have a bit of trouble with the price of extended warranty. I may get it just in case, but I'm sure I'll wind up breaking it on my own and warranty won't cover that. I'll make that decision after I get it.

If you want colors check out Sooth Creations (?). I'm sure they can hook you up. I'd probably wait until the warranty is up first.

As far as anything else goes, I really don't know a whole lot. I just wanted an Alie for a long time and finally had the means to make it happen. I went with the Sentia for the size and weight since I am not a big gamer. I'll probably sit at the bar playing poker and running my Golden Tee and Silver Strike tournaments with it. Those are more my speed.

Good luck with your purchase. I really wish I could offer you a little more, but I can't because I simply don't have the answers. Sorry.

If I am in my 1 yr warranty terms and decide ok I want to add warranty (while still under the 1 yr warranty) can I do that or does it have to be at time of purchase?

Thanks Shaz & Bax and Bax best of luck to ya getting it soon, can't wait to hear your review and see pics!

Most people have been able to add the extended warranty within the first year. I know that I keep getting emails from AW asking me if I want to upgrade my warranty on the m5500. BUT, you can't count on this happening, as they can always change their policy. (Not much help, I know )

Yep, same thing with my system. I hear they also allow you to add an additional year onto your warranty when your original warranty period is almost up.
