Well I found a MB w/processor, video, lan, audio, and modem for $10!!!

I couldn't resist the price since I have pretty much everything else I needed for it to run. The only down side is the usb 1.1 and the SDRAM. But for $10......

Anyone esle ever use one of these? I'm just waiting for the parts to come.

here is a link:

Excellant buy if you are building a machine that is over three years old. Take a look at which processors you can plug into the 470.

Well I thought it would make a perfect linux box after I add some other "older" components to it. Not enough HDD space on the laptop to really do a dual boot. I'm always out of space on as it is. It shoudl be a lot better than the **** box it will be replacing.

Oh man this is a great find! I have two spare 20gb hds and two spare 256mb 133mhz sdram. This is perfect for me!

But how does the VIA Samuel processor perform? Is it a x86 processor or a special one?

The VIA processor performs like a $10 processor, IMHO. As long as you don't require speed or performance, it's nice. Runs cool, too.

Can it out-perform my PIII Coppermine 731MHz?

I mean the specs are pretty close. 731MHz vs 800MHz. 133MHz FSB for both. 128K L1 plus 64K L2 for the VIA, 256K L2 for the PIII. 16 stage pipeline for the VIA and 10 stages for the PIII...

I just ordered one. I have a 14inch monitor, an empty ATX case with powersupply, 2 sticks of 128MB ram, 2 20GB hds. This thing is all I need to complete my unix-based firewall.

I just got my mother board yesterday(wow that was quick!) it's by no means a sager!

Just waiting for the power supply and case to show up. should be here friday. I also plan to play around w/a unix firewall/ router.

I kindof hoping to boot it up and see if worth $10(cause they don'tnymore instock from where I ordered)

Not sure weather I should install Gentoo or freeBSD. I was told it would take atleast a week to compile gentoo. not sure if I beleive that or not it could only take 6 days. lol

You are right. Tigerdirect.com removed it from their website. I was lucky to get my order in, and UPS says it will arrive March 1st.

I will be sticking with FreeBSD. I don't understand all this hype about Linux. I can't find any reason for it to be superior to the original Unices.

Well I got everything put together a few days ago. The $10 MB was definately worth it. I have installed OpenBSD no problems except that my modem was not reconized. But it was worth the $10 to have a dedicated unix box. A little more setup than windows but I got a real router now

What ethernet card did you use for router functions?

Did you use the jumper to disable the onboard ethernet port or did you make use of it in addition to an ethernet PCI card?

The MB didn't ship with a back plate. That was kind of irritating. I had to use the cutting-bench at work.

For those who don't know VIA is the company who bought out Cyrix, their processors will run, er....walk but i would say they're about 200Mhz slower then their Pentum equivilent.

I agree...I wouldn't expect this MB to do much. But I just want a firewall...a Pentium 133 is capable to this job...

I'm using an additional PCI card for routing.

Lucky me I also got a case and it happened to have the right backplate on it!
