Rumors of External DX10 Card Solutions

Thread Starter
Just rumors of course, and won't help current notebooks.

Will be a way off, if it happens at all and for notebooks...but have always wished for external graphics option. Would be ideal for desktop replacment segment where the notebook is desktop bound most of the time.

Could see a shift towards smaller notebooks with powerful cpu's - mobile when needed, and 3D power when docked.

It's actually a needed solution due to power requirements and size of the DX10 boards especially in the future. Most likely high end notebooks will have internal DX9 cards with docking for high end DX10. I know for a fact that Dell is working on this for a dock.

Also, don't forget that expresscard hooks directly in to the PCIe interface. I would imagine it is only time before you see some kind of graphics solutions thru expresscards since bandwith would not be a bottleneck like pcmcia was.... Just my .02

Forgot to add that the possible graphics expresscards probably wouldn't be bus powered, but external AC adapters. Of course, all of this is speculation on my part, but it's fun to imagine!!

Bah. I buy a laptop to have everything in one place. Right now I have it on my stomach in bed. (No, not what your thinking) I'm never at a desk with this, it's ALWAYS on my lap. Watching TV, in the car, ect. Now to now have Dirrect X 10 in a GAMING laptop would be stupid. (You can't honestly say that you bought a XPS without gaming in mind. A multimedia freak would have chosen the less expensive E1705 for example). Merom is going to use about 20% less power while giving us a speed boost. Use the 20% to power DirrectX 10.

Well, not everyone here has enough cash to go and buy a new laptop ever 4-6 months (me being one of them). It would be nice to go out and buy a new graphics card, just like you would for your desktop, once your laptops aging card is not keeping up with new games.....bla bla bla whatever.... you get the point

I wasn't shooting the idea down, (I don't have the money either, $1600 1 year ago for this)I was saying that it's stupid not to put it in a notebook. It's a good idea though.

But, having an addon DirrectX 10 graphics card to a laptop would put a dent in the XPS line, not to mention Alienware, Sager, and all gaming related notebooks. Now anyone with a certain plug could get surpior gaming power from their laptop. Many people would go cheap, a multimedia notebook for $1500 and pick this up for $500 to match the premium powered notebooks (Which are normally $2500+). What their doing (If they are) is brillant, putting themselves to a notebook gaming market to compete with everyone. Who knows, maybe the price would be knocked down to compete with the addon card even?

IllegalEagle,
That's what I am trying to say. I agree that I wouldn't, as my first choice, want any add-on anthings to carry around with me. Hell, I don't even like having to use my d-link wireless card with my old IBM! Mini-PCI wireless is so much easier to manage.....

But I still think people would opt to have a high-end card internally rather than via an add-on because of extra bulk...

What dell needs is to adapt MXM3. Then everyone could upgrade cards inside the laptop. They also need to offer the cards dirrect from them. But they won't do that because there just making $100 on the card rather than $1000 for a new notebook.

I think its an excellent idea. I know right now I am torn about buying a Precision m90. I want the graphics capability, but with a 17" screen, I'm going to be hard-pressed to find a backpack that can fit it. It would be nice to find something smaller with intel integrated video to carry to class, and when I want to game at home, I could plug in an external video card. Would allow me to save weight and battery life and still allow me to game when I want to.

I hope this comes to pass... it would do wonders to for my rig (specs in sig)

I hope it doesn't come to pass.
This is starting to remind me of the 3Dfx days.
It looks like we are getting a bit stuck with technology here.
A videocard in a seperate unit needing a power supply all together for itself?
Where is the world going to!?
No... I want to see degrading power usage and less heat production and MORE performance.

well for some of us stuck with crappy integrated graphics, an open expresscard slot, and NO alternatives to anything that requires a bit of videocard processing power, this is a WONDERFUL answer to my prayers.
