"Memory Usage" setting in XP; "programs" or "cache"?

my simple calculation - if u have more than 768MB ram, leave it to XP to manage ur virtual memory or pagefile so to put it.
leave it to "program setting"
i would not be bothered playing with memory "cache" or "disk" - windows by default would always use ram availability first and then "swaps" when it needs to
http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks1.htm makes some good reading

cheers ...

Thank you for that link. I had seen that site before, but because I was not specifically looking for this info at the time, I completely forgot about the great detailed explanations regarding the Page File system.
It really debunks a lot of rumor/myth, by supplying facts along with a comprehensive explanation of how the PF works in XP.

Really good read for everyone.

I consider myself a "novice" XP tweaker. I have taken a lot of advice from eldergeeks.com, blckviper.com, and the like. The more you dig, the more sites you find, but the more contradiction you find, too! (Then it becomes a matter of choosing the source to trust based on the other things they tell you that you know to be true.)

But still, even though I spent nearly two and a half hours reading and tweaking according to the site you supplied, I can't seem to locate information specifically, just, about those two additional settings in System / Advanced / Performance / Settings / Advanced / "Processor scheduling" & "Memory usage".

I did follow your advice and put the Memory usage setting back to "Programs".

Thanks for the help. I'm still on my quest to understand these two settings.

that is correct, but i do not believe much in contradiction as much accepting the fact that windows (xp in particular) is getting much much better as far as OS concerns. i do use Linux in // btw

may be this: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/XPMyths.html would clarify a bit about the 2 settings. one should recognize the fact that xp is still w2k based kernel with lots of improvements. i use the followings tweaks to improve my system apps performance [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\System\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\SessionManager\\Executive] And add or edit a DWORD named AdditionalCriticalWorkerThreads. Set it to 10. \t(a) hex AdditionalDelayedWorkerThreads. Set it to 16 \t(6) hex normal disclaimer - bu ur registry 1st! cheers ...

What does this tweak do?

Best way to improve system speed is to run msconfig and turn off all the little helper programs, and startup stuff. Then leave it in diagnostic mode without a warning. Be carefull you could seriously hose your system

It's really not the "best" way to speed up your system then, is it?

I am looking for information on JUST THOSE TWO SETTINGS!

Ask, and you shall receive:

http://www.windowsitlibrary.com/Content/69/06/1.html

Not a very detailed explanation, but it also talks about a bunch of other registry settings.

EDIT: 16 decimal != 6 hex (as stated above). Personally, I have the delayed worker threads value set to 6.

In researching this pair of tweaks I have read where someone had set them both at 2,5,10,and 10 & 16 like qhn's setting.

I'll look at your link now...
(thanks!)

-That's one I found yesterday. I did about half or 2/3rds the tweaks there.
I haven't maxed out my system yet to see a difference.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../wperfch7.mspx makes a good reading - but as mentioned before, XP has come a long way even though it is w2k based, and I suspect that all the whistles and bells are already being integrated. cheers ...
