Aspire 5672 DVDRW/CDRW problems getting worst!

Hey,

Have they done anything about the crap ass dvd writer/cd writer they're putting in these things? i'm soo fed up! i can't even burn a cd anymore... it has to be a specific brand, type, and speed (which is slow as hell not to mention)

my old HP that is like 5yrs old came with a better wirter! what is everyone doing about this problem? just replacing the drive itself?

thanks guys

well it reads fine... if you do a quick search in the fourm you'll see the different problems people are having. For me, it just doesn't seem to work. I try and write CDs and it says error like 99/100 times and its pissing me off... i have extended warrenty from acer so they'll replace the part for me no problem but i know others were having the same problem with the writing speeds. takes forever to burn a dvd/cd for me... if i can find the specific media that'll actually work.!

Well, i have issues with my Super multi dvd drive as well, but my problem is that windows recognizes as another model sometimes. mine is GMA-480N or something like that, yet sometimes appear as GMC-60NNNNN or something like that.

it works if i go to device manager, uninstall and reinstall. buts a pain to do this...

I just want my new computer to be able to game (WoW,Age of empires 3, Counter strike source, BF2) and to be able to burn easily etc. and that it doesnt overheat!

my current acer works fine as long as i dont fully use CPU for more than a few mins... reaching 84°C. im thinking of opening it and adding AS5.

This may not be the laptop for you then... It does tend to get pretty hot when you have both the CPU's up and running and burning with this is a bitch for most ppl that have it... (seems to only work well with certain types of media brands, like sony, hp etc. which i'm sure you know can cost much more $$ in the long run, especially if your burning 5-10 DVD/CD's a day on office backups.

What kind of error message do you get? Do you have Nero 7?
I was getting "power calibration" errors from Nero. An instant coaster.
Traced the problem to My Computer>right click DVD/CD icon and choose
recorder tab. Uncheck box for "enable CD recording on this drive".
Worked for me. This disables the built in XP burning software which
allows you to drag and drop files to an open CD-R window. Apparently
it conflicts with Nero 7 and maybe other burning programs.

You don't by any chance have Norton Ghost on you machine also? Or power Quest drive image. Both these programs use gearsec.exe.which is a CD/DVD burning tool that has been known to misbehave. If you look in device manager under your optical drive>properties>driver tab>driver details what are the drivers listed? When my drive was causing errors I kinda knew it wasn't the drive itself because it worked flawlessly when I was booted into my Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Linux) partition. It is certainly possible you have a bad drive or the laser needs cleaning. Not easily done with his slot loader. To remove the drive you need to remove the keyboard and remove one screw. Even then you can't easily access the drive innards. Lets try software fixes first before sending unit back.

Same machine I have. I don't have NTIDrvr.sys or UBHelper.sys (this is not by any stretch a stock machine I have). I suspect these drivers are associated with the NTI burning program. They could be causing a conflict. Do you have any problems with CD-RW or DVD-RW media? If you can turn off the NTI software that might help. For instance the software may be starting up with windows and running in background or have a service associated that is on auto. Use msconfig or Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml the Control Panel applet not the standalone to check for and disable any startup items related to NTI or UBHelper. If you use Mike's applet follow directions on his site. Just run the installer after download and you will have a new icon in your Control Panel called Startup. Search for items and uncheck em if you don't want them to run. Also go to start>run>services.msc and look for any service related to NTI etc that is set to auto. Change to manual if needed. If none of this works maybe it's time to give Acer a call. Before calling checkout this thread from this forum. http://www.notebookforums.com/thread163599.html the guy is an Acer tech. Below is Acer USA phone numbers. http://www.computerhope.com/comp/acer.htm

hmm my 5672 has a Matshita drive (spelling) but it is manufactured by panasonic, and i have had no problems... what 5672 do you have? the x1400 or the x1600?? I know they did some revamping for the x1600 like using a different HDD too, i run the x1600 have had no problems at all... like all the bitching everyone does about the 5672 i am glad it didn't sway be on my purchase, especially in these forums, seems like most of the complaints come from people who don't know wtf there doing anyways, and when they can't figure it out they just come here to vent... not putting u on the spot, but it's a general observation i have come to notice through out various forums. and it's like... state your delimma, or problems with your machine, and skip the badmouthing, because a individual bought to much more machine then they can handle, doesn't make it a "crap ass" anything....

Funny, I can't burn music CDs slower than 8x, and those are the one thing I do like to burn slowly for max quality... I prefer 4x. Maybe I haven't found the "right" media yet

yeahh i just went out and picked up some Sony CD's and they burn fine now... i'm just too used to my Samsung and LG burners... cheap, reliable, and will burn on a piece of paper if you have to... lol...

btw, that's the point of peer-to-peer fourms... to state issues/problems so if anyone else is having them then you can share and bitch. You want "review" then go to the "reviews" section.... i people that come on fourms to determine buying something or not is not a smart idea... you should only be here if you can handle understanding that millions of these things have been sold and your bound to have all sorts of problems... both mechanical and individual.

anyways... yeah i read all these reviews of overheating, bad speakers, slow video card etc. before i bought mine... and i still love my machine... everything other then the CD/DVD problem is perfect on this thing! i don't mind the heat (much cooler then my HP) and i love the screen (much much better then my Toshiba) not to mention my Vio seems miniscule in specs compaired to this thing... although i must say it does look a little better in some lighting conditions...

but yeah, its a stock machine, i didn't do a fresh install... i sorta needed a new machine to use right away after my HP died on me to take with me... but i probibly will be doing a fresh install before i head back to med school in sept. so i don't have any other problems.

fjgold1 ! if i didn't know better i'd say you were the acer support... lol... but seriously, thank you so much for all the help, if only more people were around like you the world would be a much better place... i'm gonna give your advice a shot this evening, and hopefully it fixes the bugs.

Nah I don't work for Acer. But I do have too much time to kill. I am
a contractor in the US Nuclear Power industry and only work 4 or 5 months
in the spring and the same in the fall. I have summers off (collect unemployment) so I have time to experiment. Much of what I know
is trial and error and reading these posts. One thing that amazes me is
how many people assume that you have to have the hidden PQ Partition
to restore to factory. Caution Rant Here. Acer for whatever reason has chosen to not include a restore disk with their machines (save money, confuse users...). They are not clear about the mechanics of this
recovery scheme. To make matters worse CompUsa techs, where a lot
of Acer laptops are sold here in the states have been telling customers
that you have to have the PQ service partition intact to do a restore
with the DVD. It is my opinion that they could have better served their
customers by just including a disk with each machine with good instructions. These are great product but this one area of support is greatly
lacking.

Well, I'm starting to believe this Matshita dvd writer is actually a piece of junk!
I burned my first data dvd today and, although the dvd is 8x certified, it would only burn at 2x!!
I don't understand why there's still no firmware update (official or not) for this drive, nor a RPC-1 firmware.
