IMPORTANT - if you have the intel pro wireless card, make sure you download the driver from the dell support site and do not use the driver on the cd. the driver on the cd will not work, it is out of date. Other than that small problem, everything seems to be running great.

thanks for the heads up! if it doesn't work, then that means you can't connect to the net right? problem for me since my house internet is wireless

i also read from notebookreview forums that if you type in a xp pro cdkey even though it's a media edition, it'll just install all the pro stuff without the media center. anyone ever tried that?

New XPS M1710 on the way

I will be getting a new XPS M1710 and asked if I should reformat in this thread.

What is the Dell software called that I need to reinstall in order for the Dual Core processor to correctly kick in and out of power management? And it was suggested in that thread that I get the "fix" for Dual Cores from AMD's web site. Does anyone know what the fix is called and can this be used for an Intel processor??

Is there a separate reformat thread just for the M1710 reinstall sequence for maximum performance? It sounds like I must reinstall SOME of the Dell software but I'm not sure exactly which is necessary. Sorry if these questions sound dumb but this will be my first laptop and I plan on reformatting as soon as it arrives to get this process out of the way.

And how easy is it to make a backup image of my system in case I need to reformat in the future?

Thanks

to utilize the processor, you need to install the chipset.

Is there an Intel disc supplied with the drivers or do they have to be downloaded? Or is it on one of the Dell discs?

should be on your driver disc.

when you reformatted, did you just reinstall windows in the one partition and kept the others, or did you delete all the other partitions to make one big partition?

hey so i just got my m1210, and i cant figure out how to reformat with keeping the partitions for mediadirect. i put the windows reinstallion cd in and went to the screen where you do partitioning. it shows two partitions, 1 uses 55mb and the other 93xxx (i don't remember). for all those who have reformatting, what steps did you take to reformat and keep the mediadirect working?

also, i've read through the "mediadirect 2.0 overview" but i can't figure it out! please help, there's too much crap on this comp!

Hi,

When I re-formatted my hard drive I did not keep the media direct or recovery partitions. I just cleaned up the whole hard drive and installed.

If I can recollect correctly, when you run the Windows setup, you are shown 3 partitions --> Dell Media Direct, the Restore Partition and the OS partition.

Of these the OS partition will be the largest. I think the other two are FAT32 formatted.

Now, I think i read somewhere (on the forum or the Dell support, I really cannot remember) that to keep the Media Direct working what you need to do is during the setup, just install over the OS partition. Leave te Media Direct partition as it is. Then after installing the OS, run the Media Direct CD (has a setup). This is supposed to repair Media Direct to it's oririnal condition.

**NOTE: I have not tried this myself. So I do NOT know if it works or not. But that's the info. I had come across.

**NOTE: Format at your own risk!!
