i have to shutdown TWICE just to get it to shutdown my computer. the first time i select shutdown, it just sits there like nothing is happenning. the only program that ends is adwatch professional. it must think i'm joking or something when i shut it down

and for the record, i also use redhat, and having just as many problems with that!!!

Use MacOS = freedom from games

I get the same problem! When I choose shut down in WinXP Pro, it just sits there for five minutes. Then it shuts down. During that five minutes everything works except for Task Manager, so I couldn't figure out whatver it is that is preventing the shut down. Stupid Windows!

delta, i thought it was updmgr.exe which is stored in Program Files/Common Files, but even when i prevented it from running, it would still give me shutdown errors!

Does windows prevent you from shutting down altogether or does it merely delay the shutdown a few minutes like mine does?

it won't shut down AT ALL!

i hit shutdown ,and then opened up a few browser windows and browsed for over 10 minutes. i then clicked the double arrow next to the clock to show my hidden icons, and it would immediately retract like it was closing the icons, but nothing was happenning.

That's what happens to me! It wouldn't shut down for a while. If I mouse over the task bar icons they would disappear. But luckily for me it does shut down eventually.

hmmmm, i just tried to restart, and it looks like the only thing that shut down was adaware.

do you run adaware?

I used to, but that was before my last formatting. (I reformat my hd every 2 months).

Could you try shutting down, and then just leave the computer running indefinitely to see if it would eventually shut down?

well i said to restart, and i'm still able to post the last message as well! to answer your question though, last night when i was done using the machine, i hit shutdwon and closed the lid. i fell asleep, and when i woke up this morning, i could hear my fans running!!!

this means that my screen was trapping in the heat ALL NIGHT!!! luckily for me, i didn't have anything running, and it was just warm under there, BUT STILL!!!

that's the last time i trust windows to do something as simple as turn off.

Haha! Windows really needs a "TURN OFF THIS F'KING COMPUTER OFF RIGHT THE HELL NOW YOU STUPID TWIT OS!!!" button. Much more useful than the "Start" button!!
I had enough with the "start" botton, so I replaced Luna with a theme that only displays a little windows logo without the trite "start" text.
is there a way to manually shut it down?
if you hold down the power button for ~7 seconds or so it will shut down the laptop... Graunted, windows tells you not to do that, but i think XP is a little more forgiving.

same problem here...have to click the "shutdown" icon twice. xp pro here. haven't tried patiently waiting 5+ minutes after the first click, but it sure looks like it's not gonna do anything until i click again or hit the power button.

*shrug*

Just to run contrary to the experiences in this thread, mine (XP Pro) shuts down quickly ever time. I don't believe it is Windows per se, more likely some program not responding (or several programs). XP will wait 15 seconds before shutting them down. If the program is a server process you will not see the popup messages relating to this. The other culprit is Messenger. If you have it enabled, it can cause the lockup and conversely if you have it disabled but have not done the registry tweaks to stop programs like MS Outlook waiting for a non-existant Messenger to exit you will have the same problem. You did do the registry tweaks when you disabled Messenger didn't you?

Delta how come you reformat every couple of months? My systems are lucky to see a reformat once in their lifetime.

aussie, the thing is no matter how long i wait, it NEVER shuts down. it's like it's not getting the kill command until i shutdown twice. shuting down twice shouldn't change the priority of a shutdown, but that's basically how it's behaving. if it's a runaway process, it shouldn't matter how many times i shutdown, until i or the machine kills that process, it should still prevent me from shutting down.

I would shutdown, go into the task manager, and kill tasks 1 by 1 until the machine shuts down immediately afterward. Once you figure out the task thats hindering it, try to either disable the task or end it before beginning shutdown.

I've had similiar problems, but its always a task thats hanging out and refuses to shut down.
