YOWZA, that's a cool color!

Well, I promised I'd post some pictures, and since the 8887 (and 8886 for that matter) have been reviewed in-depth by others, I thought I would post a few quick-pix of my 8887-X (Hybrid) Sager.

First of all, it is the fully-loaded 8887-X that you can get from PC Torque and I got the HYBRID custom color along with matching mouse.

And now for some nifty pictures:
(Excuse the feminine comforter/bed-cover, but let's see what you use when you are married!)

# 1 - This is looking at it from the top:

# 2 - This is for showing the THICKNESS of the computer, note the ultra-cool, take-me-back-to-the-70's Mattel electronic Baseball game!

# 3 - This is the LEFT side. Note the detail of what's colored. The CD/DVD/CDRW drive door, but not the plasic PCMCIA inserts (no biggie there).

# 4 - This is the REAR view, all the ports one could ever need! Ironically, they are upside down (PS/2 "flat" part goes down, Firewire "curve" is pointing to the left, etc).

# 5 - Here is the RIGHT side of the machine with the MP3 player inserted. Nice clean job on the exhaust grill!

# 6 - Same RIGHT side, but I pulled out the mp3 player a bit to show people exactly how it goes. By the way, the two little "flaps" that close off the hole when the player is removed ALSO got painted... nice!

# 7 - Here is an Opened Up view... nice color and texture!

# 8 - This is mainly for scale. I'm a big guy (6'-2"+) and have proportional hands (stop already!) so I thought I'd show you how ROOMY the keyboard is with my hand (other hand is holding the camera, real professional-like!)

# 9 - Here is a screen-shot (literally), hard to do a dead-on without proper lighting, etc., so it's angled... notice the TASK MANAGER? That's right, TWO cpu's! HT is FULLY enabled (did the re-format method, since I wanted to partition my disk anyway and just got the machine). Also notice the WIRELESS LAN connection! Yeah, baby, yeah!

#10 - "Color By ColorWare" little logo. My stuck pixel is roughly in this area (it's red, and doesn't show up in photos).

#11 - This is the 2.5" external Firewire 40GB 5400 rpm drive (one of 3 external firewire drives I have)... what's this!? NO power supply?! View on...

#12 - This is the famous PS/2 Power-Tap that powers external devices (well, my HD's) it has a pass-through, so I can even hook up my matching colored mouse...

#13 - This is the matching color mouse that I also ordered. It's sweet and is like icing on the cake! The thing that it is sitting on is a Laptop Desk and is quite handy, I highly recommend them!

Well, that's about a big enough post, any questions or photo-requests, let me know!

The Hybrid Color is MOST excellent. I like it more in person than from the photos. Also, get used to the NEW PAINT smell for several days (at least), as it's a bit strong at first, but goes away (some like it, I'm neutral).

They didnt' paint the MP3 player itself? Hmm, I would wish they would have done that. Seems odd to have a bit of light/dark grey sticking out of the side of the computer there. At least the bay doors are painted. Otherwise looks AWESOME!

looking good

Did you put that colorware logo on or did it come like that?

That's how it came. I also noticed the ATI sticker looks worn where you see they peeled it off (causing micro-creases) and then re-applied it.

I would have told them to leave it off, as I don't care about stickers on a computer, but oh well.

Tyranous,

They don't paint the MP3 player because it's a snug fit from the factory and the paint would make it rub sliding it in and out if it would even fit. It would probably run the paint off having it sliding against plastic all the time.

Colorware puts their logo on all of the systems they paint for us.

I can smell the paint from here. Smells like something foul!
I guess you could at least paint the END of the MP3 player (then of course it would look silly when you took it out and carried it around....guess I just can't win

Delete this guy already!

Like the red Myrkat! Definitely unique setup for any such thing as a typical 'grey' device such as the traditional laptop.

My opinion is that the mp3 player should stay the silver color it is. Better that way, and it looks like another cool adapter plugged "into" your system that way as well!

I like the FireWire HDD as well. What make is it? and specs? and the PS/2 power tap is neat as well! How does the power ratings work on those things? Are they all compatible e.g. with the requirements of the FireWire HDD?

Yeah, I think it may look a bit more red in the photos... it's more like a Basketball color (new one, with more red than orange).

As for the drive, I bought mine from Bason Computers (I had to call and order the USB2.0/Firewire combo w/ PS/2 PowerTAP). The 40GB 5400 Toshiba version set me back about $210 +/-, but the guy sent an extra PS/2 power tap for my previous (firewire-only) 20GB drive.

And notice that cable? That's a $20 cable if there ever was one, and the USB 2.0 is the same! SOLID.

Anyway, you can find their (not-so-updated) website here, but I'd recommend an e-mail or calling them. They are very friendly and helpful.

Not meaning to QUOTE myself, but...

I meant to add that the other 2.5" external drive I bought from Bason was firewire only, and a 4200rpm generic drive... ironically, I like that one BETTER than the 5400rpm Toshiba. The Toshiba is NOISIER (not that there's much noise) and it "vibrates" more - I mean, you feel that sucker hum if you hold it while its running. It also is hotter. I know, I know... these all can be expected with 5400 vs 4200, but I usually recommend 4200 rpm now because of longevity (they last longer) and heat/noise is less, with performance gains negligable (from my perspective)

Performance-wise, I'd say it's roughly the same (FAST), hard to tell the difference for me.

To fill in some blanks, I use these drives DAILY as my mp3 cache (about 16GB) and download/transfer disks. So they get typical daily use. I haven't installed a game onto them, as I only use them as data drives. So you can see, I may not be pushing them to their limits to see the "big difference" between 5400 and 4200.

Pardon any ignorance, but what exactly does that ps/2 powertap thing let you do? Will it let me charge my ipod if i get an 8887, or is it only for specific hard drives? Hwere can I check it out?

Basically, it replaces an AC adapter (that would plug into the wall). It powers the device from the PS/2 port (there's power in them 'thar ports!)

Not GREAT for a laptop on battery power, but if you're plugged in, it's one less little wall-brick to carry around.

I don't have an iPOD, but this site looks pretty good for power-related stuff. Especially THIS THING which would probably work with external HD's, too...

wow, looks great... I would probably get my 5660 painted when I order it, except I want a 2nd battery for the modular bay, which for some reason wouldn't be painted...

Sweet. I'll be getting my 5660 in envy green very soon.

Yeah and the memory card would look weird unless you took the time and risk to paint the end of each one..

I think it's more of a balance... The screen, keyboard and touchpad are all (basically) black, too... to this presents more of a two-tone.

It would be interesting to see a "wet look" on a Sager (ie Paint everything!)
