Hello,
About 2 months ago I started to notice a drastic decrease in performance in my 8890. The symptoms I'm experiencing are rather odd and have left me baffled as to the cause of the problem. Whenever I do anything processer intensive (pretty much anything except surfing the internet), especially processes that use require a lot of video processing such as gaming, my 8890 experiences 5 minute spurts of horrible performance followed by 1-2 minute spurts of normal performance. During the bad performance cycles I've noticed, through accessing the task manager's process list, that 2-3 processes that are running will begin to compete for CPU resources. For example, during a normal operating cycle my CPU load will be 1-20%, but then during the 5 minutes of bad performance it will jump to 50-100% constantly. Menial tasks such as winamp, internet explorer, or any other process running at the time will suddenly start to use 15-50% of the CPU load constantly, where are they are normally between 1-5%. Like I said, the normal performance lasts 2 minutes, then there's about 5 minutes of bad performance, and it continues to repeat that way until I lighten the load on the CPU either by ending a bunch of processes or closing down whatever game I might have running at the time.
At this point I'm guessing it's a hardware issue because I have reformatted and reinstalled windows xp, but doing so did not resolve the issue. I tested my memory today with the windows memory diagnostic utility and it found no errors (I ran the extended tests, not only the normal ones). If anyone could help me figure out the cause of my problem I'd be greatly appreciative; it's basically turned my kick ass gaming laptop into a useless laptop thats only useful for word processing and surfing the net.
