64-bit in near future.. - Page 4

I've not yet seen anyone with an A64 and UXGA (and believe me, I've looked). The best deal I've seen for an A64 is Cyberpower. Both Hypersonic and Voodoo are way more expensive (even though they're both based on the Mitac shell). I'm hopeful (not very, though) that Mitac (it is the ODM and not the OEM that does this, yes?) will be getting the m11 into their shells soon. Then I will buy... (Still holding out slim hope for Clevo, but its not looking good)

being that the hypersonic and cyberpower AMD 64 notebooks are pretty much the same, if you look at hypersonic pc site, under the AMD 64 system battery life is 140- 200 min, pretty damn good for a system of this power if you ask me. along wit being around 7.3 pounds.

It would be great to see an M11 in anything other than a Dell right now. I'm leaning toward the Hypersonic over the Cyberpower. Hypersonic has PC3200 DDR400 RAM, Arctic Silver already done, the internal wifi is a bit steep but its a+b+g. Just wish it had the 10/100/1000 ethernet, and a UXGA screen (for the 1:1 with 800x600 and the 400:1 contrast). Can't wait to see a review on it. How do you think the 3400+ compares to the 3.2 P4?

I'm not sure about gaming, but it took more than 35min for P4 3.2GHz HT enable at my university lab to compile the Firefox 0.8 in MSVC++ .NET 2003. I compile the same code on my eMachine AMD64 laptop within only 30min.

Were you using the WinXP 64-bit on your emachine? Would that allow it to work faster or was it just the chip itself that did it? I doubt that a chip of that speed will really have too much of a difference for games...I don't think any game needs that much cpu power yet, just graphic card power.

I am think of just getting eMachine AMD64 laptop (m6807) just for now as it is at a good price. Later on when an A64 with M11, UXGA etc comes out (later this year?) i will get that. I presume then I will need a backup notebook which will be the m6807.

Wish I had the moneyw to do something like that. Guess I'll just keep saving.

if im not mistaken, isn't the 3000+ the 3.0ghz 3200+ being the 3.2ghz and 3400+ being the 3.4ghz, someone correct me if im wrong
post #69 of 202
Thought both the 3000+ and 3200+ operate at 2.0ghz and the 3400+ operates at 2.2ghz. At least thats what I was reading on Tom's Hardware. But somehow it still competes with Intel.

*cough* shorter pipelines in the AMD *cough*

Intel right now is keeping thier mouth shut about thier 64 bit system because i heard it was suppose to be IDENTICAL to AMDs systems, but hey its only rumors

DeaDLok: Those A64 3000+/3200+/3400+ numbers are marketing numbers AMD cooked up to give relative performance against P4s at a given clock speed. The 3400+ only runs at 2.2Ghz and is faster than the P4 3.2Ghz, but I haven't seen anywhere that the 3400+ is consistently faster than the P4 3.4.

Check out Anandtech's review of the A64 3400+ here: http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1946

Beyond that, the A64, is, of course, a 64 bit chip and you will (should) see anywhere from a 10% - 30%+ increase with Win XP 64, 64 bit graphic drivers and a 64 bit recompile of any given game.

ps: It its true that Intel's 64 bit chip is the same as AMD's. It just extends the x86 registers into the realm of 64 bit.

I haven't seen any a64's with UXGA screens, to my knowledge Mitac's laptop has the highest resoltion. Though it's not something I'm too bothered by since I'll be using an external monitor for major gaming which will be done at home, lan's, etc.

padsterman: Check this out before going emachines: http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/high...648000.asp?v=d

It has the 128mb 9600pro at least.

I love AMD. On one of my old games, it says for minimum requirement, "Minimum 800mhz Intel Processor, or any AMD Processor" that cracks me up

i was looking at the reviews of the 3400+ and they said that the performance of it was just shy away from Athon 64 FX chip, if thats what they say it is then i would defenitly go with 3400+ and the FX chip is being almost comparable to the P4 EE chip and 1/3 of the price

You have no argument from me that the A64 chips are awesome. That's what I want (and am going to get) in my next laptop. The upgrade cycle on laptops is long enough that I want a 64 bit chip. Even if its a year away (more likely 10 months or less), there will be 64 bit windoze XP (not just a pre-beta), 64 bit ATI Drivers (nVidia has some out already, I believe) and 64 bit games. Plus its no more expensive (it may be less) than a comparable P4 AND it seems to get better battery life.

I want to be ready.

I hear you, though i hear the Win XP 64 comes out in a few months so will be more than ready nex coming months, instead of next year

That's all good for me
