Gateway 7320gz power button failure

I have a Gateway 7320GZ laptop that is out of warranty. The power button started to act strange and now it does not do anything. It acts like it is stuck down but it is not. What is the best way to remedy the problem? Any cautions or directions for dissassembly/replacement? What about parts?

Thanks for the reply! I removed the power panel and board. I also removed the board from the panel. Is the power button supposed to act springy - mine does not. Could I have a broken spring in the button? Is there a way to fix it? Do you know of a place to get a panel?

Thanks

possible fix

There is a way to fix a power button having a broken plastic tab (the tiny piece the pushes down on the rubber push button).

See my next message...

Yea, I bid on two of them and lost both. At least I figured out the problem. It's the power button itself. The small tabs that connect the button to the black plastic were cracked on one side, allowing the button to fall in and hook on the circuit board. I removed the button, drillied the hole in the black plastic larger so I can get to button on the board. I can now turn it on with the push of a pencil eraser. I know ...a real Macgyverism...

I can still use a black plastic cover to fix it correctly!

Thanks

The tabs that hold the gray button in the black plastic were broken... is this what you mean?

Yes that's what I mean. A simple fix:

1) find a piece of clear plastic that is semi-flexible
2) cut about a 2/3 x 1/2 inch piece
3) remove the 3 screws from the power panel
4) slip in the plastic so that it covers about 1/2 of the right side of the button
5) replace the screws, making sure the plastic stays in place

Make sure the plastic isn't too thick, else it may push the button up too much so that when you close the lid, the laptop would power on/off.
